Walmart in Moncks Corner has about 12 self check outs that eliminate wait time and dealing with clerks unless you can't figure out how to use them. There is usually one employee watching those lanes(which are always open) to assist anyone needing it. I have never seen a line in that store because of those lanes. Maybe instead of just complaining on here, since a viable solution exists and is used by the corporation you could all write to the corporate offices asking for some of those self check out lanes in the Georgetown store. seriously: who said their job was lowly? i started out as a cashier at 14 in one of the department stores on front street. i was paid $5.00 per day and it was a 10 hour day. then i went to a five and dime. i never complained, did my job and was happy to get paid, and never stole. people who are lazy, and steal from their employer, thinks the working class owes them a free ride. i know a janitor that takes pride in his work, and doesn't steal from the system. i know a cleaning lady that takes pride in her job and doesn't be rude and doesn't steal from those who employ her. does it have to do with the area? does it have to do with the lack of education? or is it bred from birth? I don't have any complaints about the cashiers at wal-mart but some of the other employees are incredibly rude. There is one woman who works in the deli (I don't know if she is still there since I no longer go to the wal-mart deli) who seems downright miserable. When you walk up to the counter she just throws her head back, which is your clue to tell her what you want, and then she drags her feet over to the scale, weighs your chicken and then slings it up on the counter, never uttering so much as a word. She also does move a second faster no matter how long the line gets. I guess she figures she is getting paid the same hourly wage regardless if she serves two customers in a 30 minute span or all six customers waiting in line. Sorry, but if you are that unhappy with your job I am sure there are other job applicants willing to work, and be happy. Posted by GG on 7/11/2008 |

glad i'm gone: tell e'm!!! i haven't shopped in any other walmart that is as slack as the one in georgetown. we lost shoney's. we lost the winn dixie. we lost the hardees in andrews. what is that telling us. i think it tells us that they had a problem getting honest, conscientious, intelligent employees. walmart moves in with low prices, drives out the mom and pop stores, hires minimum wage uneducated workers and then when the mom and pops have to close the doors, they go up on the prices in order to cover the thefts and hire 3 uneducated, unqualified associates to pretend to do the job that one conscientious employee can do.and its not just walmart! i had to stop eating at a fast food restaurant in georgetown because i kept getting chicken that was almost raw. how much brain does it take to fry chicken? I was treated very harshly by an employee at Walmart and actually called to speak to the department manager. I was then informed that my offender was the department mananger and requested the store manager. After being on hold for 20 minutes my call was disconnected. I now shop anywhere but Walmart. Try driving over those bridges...people are nice and helpful just a few miles down the road. It is worth the gas. Walmart is not the only problem in Georgetown! I have lived in Georgetown pretty much all of my life. I am a frequent Wal-Mart shopper and I happen to know several of the workers there from over the years, quite a few even remember me from when I was a little girl. From what I understand, the workers there are scheduled for crazy amounts of hours because the management there tries to make the most out of the smallest amount of employees necessary to get things done. They are underpaid for their hard work and long hours. They stand on their feet for hours at a time and after working with the public for many years, I found out the hard way that the public is NOT easy to please. I waited tables through High School and College and remember being taken for granted and berated quite often. Rude remarks and being ignored while you are trying to do your best at your job will cause you to become frustrated even on a good day. Its not just Wal-Mart Employees with this issue. Yes, there will always be negative attitudes and crooks everywhere you go, but the best way to handle the attitude is to just smile at them and say, "Have a great day!" Kill them with kindness! You never know what they are going through and what a kind word could do for them. As for the criminal activity, did they really think they would get away with it for long? I think the big picture here is a general lack of respect. People don't respect other people's property and they don't respect each other... or themselves, for that matter. For example, stealing your "friend's" Electronics and Guns out of his apartment while he isn't home and pawning them? (Police Blotter) What kind of self-respecting person (or friend) does that?!? If we could all just give two hoots about our neighbor and our character instead of demanding instant gratification and being so angsty to one another (for those who are busy making derogatory remarks to one another within a newspaper comment blog, for crying out loud!), we could see so much of a difference. We claim to live in the "friendly South", but these days, I'm not feeling the love! I am not some unrealistic sap with lofty notions... I still work with the public every day at a meaningful and well-paying job with a related 4 year degree under my belt. I still deal with bad attitudes all the time, but I have equipped myself with effective ways to handle it. I do not deny that Wal-Mart Management definitely needs to wake up and bring their game up several notches. My final thought is this: No matter how "low" you think their job is... someone has to do it! Even a janitor's job is fundamental. Would you rather they sit at home while you work hard all day to help pay their Welfare? At least they [the honest, law-abiding employees] are willing to work! Posted by Seriously? on 7/10/2008 |

glad to be gone: i'm responding to your first post. apparently myrtle beach is considering doing away with the "bike weeks" over relatively the same thing. unfortunately wallmart can't fire all of their employees to satisfy the NAACP. i don't believe that your statements were racially motivated, but a description of a past experience. i was amused by the critisism that you got from the statement. i know sometimes the truth hurts. it's nice to know that we never have to own up to what we do as long as big brother NAACP is around. i like comedy (obviously, or i wouldn't bother to read most of this) i watch comic view on BET. i have noticed that nearly all of the comedians make fun of the whole caucasian race. i laugh, because it's amusing. but then you let some yo-yo on talk radio say" nappy headed ho" and then everyone cries like a school girl with a boo boo on their knee. if you can't take it don't dish it out. i have never met a caucasian person who owned a slave, and don't understand why they have to be accountable for the sins of their fathers. i doubt that most of you who get offended by this would be able to live up to the sins of your own. hell half of you might not even know who he is. i know i must be an uncle tom! my point is, it's the 21st century, and kunta kinte died a long time ago. get over it and shut up Posted by chicken george on 7/9/2008 |

in response to mary from maryville: i agree wiyh you completely. i've waled into walmart on a friday afternoon to find two registers open. friday,a.k.a. payday for most, would probably be considered a high-volume shopping day. i have worked in retail in the past, and i understand the sales quota/ employee hours relationship. however, being the biggest retail store in town, one might expect management to show just a little bit of initiative and schedule more people. as previosly stated walmart more or less has a monopoly in georgetown (at least after 5 p.m.) and therefor, the motto "the customer is always right" doesnt apply to them. on the flip side, they may have problems with people calling in and not showing up on the weekends. i shouldn't pass judgment on wal-mart's mangement until i've walked in their shoes. no! it's definately their fault. they should have hired that young man that georgetown citizen refered to. Glad I'm Gone said: "... but you can be sure that, with me, you get what you give." For sure. And you, too, get what you give. To Me Too and Cece: I do have people problems. Problems with people who are naive and won't admit facts. I also have a problem with employees who are thieves and get away with it because of the color of their skin. My posting is completely factual and varifiable. That's where my energy was put. Tell the truth, face the truth. That's what will make things better; not glossing over it with one liners, and waxing philosophical about hatred of one another. If you choose to think I'm a racist, you're wrong. But think what you want; it's easier than facing the truth. I'm a realist; you should try it. I don't treat people poorly because of their color; but you can be sure that, with me, you get what you give... and as far as Georgetown is concerned, I'm still Glad I'm Gone. I am really concerned about the comments concerning this article. First, this article is about employee theft, not the service we receive at Wal-Mart. We need to stay on topic! Next, I am very concerned about the comment made concerning the treatment of Wal-Mart employees and its "no wonder" they steal. My husband was not treated fairly by Wal-Mart but he did not break the law! Stealing is wrong, there is no excuse. I am not happy with my current income, so I work harder and find other opportunities to leagally make more money. All of this starts in the home. At a very young age, we should enocourage our children to work hard, stay in school and go to COLLEGE. We all have the same opportunities if we choose to work hard and be respectable citizens. It not ok to steal because we think someone owes us something. We owe it to ourselves and our country, and future generations to do the right thing. Sorry I went off topic just a little :) Posted by A very concerned citizen on 7/9/2008 |

It sounds like most of the residents making these comments think they don't have shortcomings. My goodness, let's love and care about each other. Let management worry about their own employee's. I fyou don't like shopping at Walmart, go somewhere else. Posted by TS on 7/9/2008 |

Maybe my eyeglasses are too dark, but I have never experienced a rude cashier at Wal-Mart, Georgetown, and I practically live there. I see stressed people, people taking rude treatment from ignorant customers, and jerks acting surprised when the cashier announces the total of their purchase. It's like "Duh, oh I'm supposed to pay?" At that point, they start searching inside their purse. And the cashier has to stand and wait under the glare of people waiting in line. Maybe if we were more considerate of the cashier who is doing her job, we'd get better response. We can start by acknowledging them as people. Doesn't the Bible say something about removing the log from your own eye? It might let you see better. Posted by Charlie on 7/9/2008 |

Reading all the comments is hiliarious to me because we all have the same complaint and comment: WalMart Employees and how customers are being treated at the Georgetown WalMart! I'm not surprised at the theft going on there because I believe they don't treat their employees good. If they treat their employees bad, how do you think we going to be treated as customers? We need KMart & Big Lots to come back because not everyone don't want to shop at WalMart because the service there sucks! I would pay gas (& we all know gas is high as hell) to go to other stores before I enter a WalMart here in Georgetown. Yes I hope the managers at WalMart see what everyone posting their comments about their Georgetown store because they need to be aware that their service sucks and it won't hurt to have my cashier lines when you have alot of customers coming to your store. Believe me, if other stores come in this area, WalMart will be out of service due to lack of professionalism! Posted by Georgetown Girl on 7/9/2008 |

I was a Georgetown resident for most of my life and a Walmart employee for more than ten years (much of that time in the Georgetown Walmart). I'm not surprised at the employee theft; it happened when I worked there on a regular basis, and it was almost always black employees who committed the crime. However, typically they got away with it by screaming discrimination. There was always one particular girl who was the racial ringleader and nomatter the circumstances, intimidated management by calling or threatening to call the NAACP and other racial groups. On one occasion, when several black employees were caught in a theft conspiricy ring and fired, the NAACP threatened the corporation with boycott. The employees were reinstated. The store manager, who was a good manager and a good person, was helpless. While I'm aware that white Georgetonians also steal from that store, it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that most of the crime committed in Walmart (and Georgetown in general) is committed by black people; it's a historical fact and isn't going to change. As far as Georgetown's not being user friendly with regards to new businesses: What can you expect? You have a town with no leadership; it's like a ship without a rudder. The city fathers would rather have a pollution producing mill in the middle of downtown than a community partner like Lowes. The town is (for whatever reason) an "All American City", but can't even supoort a movie theatre. Wake up, change it or do like so many others: Get out and discover that there is a real world outside that smelly bubble. Posted by Glad To Be Gone on 7/9/2008 |

Walmart isn't the only store in Georgetown that has a problem with employee theft. The Big Lots store closed because they were losing more money than they were taking in due to employee theft. There are some businesses that won't come to Georgetown because the people they hire to work in their businesses rob them blind. This happens everywhere, but Georgetown is the worst. This isn't a criticism of Georgetown; I have lived here for many years and hope to live here for the rest of my life. I love Georgetown. Back to the issue, Walmart loses thousands of dollars every month due to employee theft. This doesn't include the money they lose to regular shoplifters. Part of the problem is the people they are hiring. I know of one young man who applied for a job at Walmart and wasn't hired. I can't understand why because he is an honest, trustworthy, intelligent young man who won a four year scholarship to a prestigious university. Instead of hiring him, Walmart probably hired one of the thugs who stole from them. Walmart management: hire better people like the young man you rejected. He would NEVER have stolen a stick of gum from your store, much less hundreds of dollars worth of electronics. Posted by A Georgetown Citizen on 7/9/2008 |

I would sure like to know who was fired. I suspect it may have been someone back at the Garden Shop register. If not, management should really look at that area. It may be time to completely change the personnel back there. Posted by Curious on 7/9/2008 |

two sides to every coin, and a business MAY require you to show a receipt for shoplifting purposes. most reciept checks are just a mark on the receipt to show that the purchase was made on that visit. without the mark, its possible for a customer to buy a product on one visit, go back at another visit and walk out the door with the same product, receipt in hand. again, this is not a sign ordinance so marty may not be an expert. some people just need to stay where only they are welcome. if you dont like it, dont shop there! normally, you should only have to tell children twice. I avoid Walmart as much as possible. When I do go there and can not find an item, I seach for that blue vest. My blue vested help is usually "IF YOU AIN'T SEE 'EM, WE AIN'T GOT 'EM" This is from department managers. 95% of all the employees give act like you have barged into their home and demanded help. (unless you are they cousin Shameekijalicia) This is the same for the employees at McDonald, BK, etc. It is simply amazing to ride down the road just a bit and visit a grocery store or fast food chain in Pawleys. EVERY employee I have been in contact with in Pawleys would make that establishment proud to have such person working for them. I try to shop over the bridges, and I am not alone. I was in wal mart last night. In the whole front of the store only 4 checkout lines were open with long lines in each of those. I had read this before I left home so I decided to time my wait. From the time I stepped in line until I got to the cashier, it took 17 minutes. That may not seem like a long time but when you have two screaming kids, it's an eternity. I swear if someone were to open a Target or Super Kmart across the street, Wam Mart may go under because people are sick and tired of the service. But they know they can get away with it because, at $4 a gallon, people can't afford to drive to the beach or charleston to shop every week. Wal Mart feels they are holding Georgetown hostage since they have no competition. I know that a wal mart competitor would make it in Georgetown. By the way, thanks for having this outlet to discuss REAL issues that affect REAL people. I get so sick of reading about stupid signs and a man's 20-year-ago sex life which is all that other board is about. I have no signs and could care less about who had kids with who. I shop at Wal Mart and have kids in school. The issues discussed here are the important ones. Thanks for the forum. Posted by Mary of Maryville on 7/9/2008 |

( stilling, for you "georgetown resident") both from the employees and the pro-jects (that's right "georgetown resident" i know where you live).and as far as the rude and disgusting (you spelled that correctly, congradulations)customers, you wouldn't have to deal with them if you would have stayed in school. i have three letters for you, G E D!!!!!!!!get one Posted by thank god for surfside on 7/9/2008 |

let me appologize for the y's missing from my they's on my last post. i'm sure that "georgetown resident" wouldn't have caught it, but i was commenting on spelling and grammer. Posted by thank go for surfside on 7/9/2008 |

All I have to say people is this will not change because the officials of georgetown DO NOT ALLOW change if they did K-Mart, Lowes, etc., would require Walmart to compete price wise and customer service wise. It's really very sad that I am a Georgetown County resident and feel forced into shopping in Charleston and Horry County. I refuse to be treated like garbage and pay someone to do it. well first, let me comment on " georgetown resident's" post. you obviously wear a blue vest when you go to work! i am quite certain that hooked on phonics didn't work for you. i'm sorry that they decided to still from yo sto. anyway, back to the walmart issue. wasn't there a kmart here at one time? i know that lowes wanted to open a store here too, but nobody wanted to " box the neck". anytime a business wants to open in georgetown, it is met with resistance and protest. now everyone wants to complain about wal-mart and "their" (that one was for you georgtown resident)slack employees! wal-mart is out of every-day items, like country crock butter, for a week because the can. because the have little competition, because georgetown likes it that way! Maybe this is part of Walmart's Employee Benefits Package--you are exempt from arrest once for each year you work there. You'd think that a regular old shoplifter who is caught on camara stealing would be immediately arrested. Posted by Disgusted on 7/9/2008 |

Let me make sure I understand this: Employees were captured on the video surveillance cameras stealing, but they have not been arrested. Would a regular shoplifter get away with this? Or perhaps this is part of Walmart's employee benefits program- one free pass on prosecution for theft for each year of employment? Posted by Disgusted shopper on 7/9/2008 |

I firmly belive that you cannot and should not insult the entire Walmart staff by printing some of the garbage some of my neighbors have stated in the comment above. Yes its true some of the cashiers there act like they dont like their jobs but you will find unhappy people inside of all places of buisness. I really think that the ones who did the crime should be punished. However, i dont think that it is fair to blame all of the staff. If you dont like the staff shop somewhere else and keep your negative comments to yourself!!! Misery loves company. Posted by your friendly walmart shopper on 7/9/2008 |

FIRST OFF YES THE THREE EMPLOYEES AT WAL-MART SHOULD'VE GOT FIRED FOR WHAT THEY WERE DOING BUT WAL-MART ISNT THE ONLY STORE PEOPLE GO IN AND STILL FROM. NOT JUST THAT YOU TALKING ABOUT THERE EMPLOYEES BUT WHAT ABOUT THE RUDE DISGUSTING CUSTOMERS THAT BE GOING IN WAL-MART ACTING LIKE THERE TO GOOD TO HAND THE CASHIER MONEY AND THROWS IT AT THEM. YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER YOUR NOT THE ONLY ONE IN WAL-MART SO IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THEM BEING SLOW AND LAZY GO SOME WHERE ELSE. THEY STILL GETTING PAID WHILE YOU SITTING HERE COMPLAINING. IF YOU WANT A ROBOT THATS JUST GOING TO BE QUIET AND JUST RING YOU UP ORDER OFF LINE. LETS TALK ABOUT THE COMMENT THAT SAID AN ITEM IS THERE ONE WEEK IN OUT THE NEXT WONT YOU SIT DOWN AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU SAID????? THIS IS THE ONLY WAL-MART IN GEORGETOWN. SO IF YOU DONT LIKE WAL-MART STAY OUT IT. ITS NOT HURTING NO ONE IF YOU DONT GO. Posted by Georgetown Resident on 7/8/2008 |

take any legal advice given by Marty Tennant at your own risk; he feels the most important laws on the books are sign ordinances. if you agree to enter and patronize a business, you may also agree to verification of your purchases on said premises, too, if youre notified of such searches prior to your patronage. if you dont like it, shop somewhere else! Someone must make sure that the management does get these comments. I will be one that will furnish them to a person I know there. I had a rather long chat with this person (long time management) a f ew months ago about basically the same sort of theft. Folks, what are they dealing with for cashiers and other employees. Ever been to the Surfside store and noticed the difference in make-up of employees? G'Town Wal-Mart has an employee base that loves working there because they can do what they want when they want. This is just one example of the theft that is obvious if you want to spend some time looking and listening. Posted by Observer on 7/8/2008 |

I agree, it is ridiculously slow and many of the cashier do act like they hate their jobs, but believe it or not...Conway's Wal-Mart is even worse. Thank goodness for Walgreens!!! Posted by Gtown girl on 7/8/2008 |

I almost HATE shopping there. The cashiers are always talking to each other and act like it pains them to ring you up ???? Some of them dress like there going to a bar and not to work..its really bad at Georgtown, I hope the store manager reads this and takes a good look around... Posted by Fed Up 2 on 7/8/2008 |

Makes me wonder if these three people are connected to the person who stole the two computer monitors from last week. Just something to think about. Posted by Makes Me Wonder on 7/8/2008 |

fed up - You are NOT required to show your receipt. Tell them you do not wish to stop and tell them it's your legal right to not be accused of theft or stopped illegally Posted by Marty Tennant on 7/8/2008 |

several times when checking out in walmart, during the rush hour, the same cashier has ushered me to another cashier for her own personal reasons. laziness, i think. also, i have noticed that they like for you to not get all your bags. and while i'm on the subject of walmart and its cashiers, i would like to say that i resent the door watcher, or whatever you call her, checking my receipt and packages after she has sat there and watched me check out and pay. how dumb is this. i refuse to stop for them. they will have to chase me down and have me arrested. what they are doing is actually accusing the customer of theft. WALMART CAHIERS AT THE GEORGETOWN STORE ARE SO LAZY AND SLOW, I'M SURPRISED THAT THEY WERE SMART ENOUGH TO STEAL. WHENEVER THEY ARE CHECKING ME OUT, THEY ARE ALWAYS LOOKING AROUND TO SEE WHAT THEY ARE MISSING OR EITHER TALKING ON THE PHONE OR TALKING WITH SOMEONE ELSE IN THE LINE, INSTEAD OF DOING THEIR JOB. THEY WOULDN'T LAST 10 MINUTES WORKING FOR ME. IF I HAD A CHOICE OF BUYING CERTAIN ITEMS FROM ANY OTHER BUSINESS, I WOULD NEVER STEP FOOT IN THE WALMART IN GEORGETOWN AGAIN, BECAUSE OF ITS SLACK EMPLOYEES. I AM PROUD OF THE ONE EMPLOYEE THAT CAME FORWARD TO TURN THEM IN. HE MUST BE NEW AND HASN'T BEEN CONTAMINATED BY THE OTHERS. MANAGEMENT OF THE STORE IN GEORGETOWN HAS TO KNOW HOW SLACK IT IS RUN. HAVE YOU NOTICED HOW AN ITEM IS AVAILABLE ONE WEEK AND THE VERY NEXT TIME YOU NEED IT, THEY DON'T HAVE IT OR THE WRONG ITEM HAS BEEN ORDERED. WHEN YOU ASK AN "ASSOCIATE" THEY TAKE PRIDE IN TELLING YOU THAT THEY DON'T KNOW ANYTHING.............. THAT I BELIEVE!!!!! Posted by LOCAL on 7/8/2008 |

Another reason why you need to pay attention to the casher and the items they are ringing up. Look closely at your receipt. Posted by Cece on 7/8/2008 |

Bet you if Wal-Mart wants to pursue this they will catch at least two people every day of every week of every month. Almost 100% of the cashiers are ..... ? Yep, you got it. Posted by Just Me on 7/8/2008 |

This sounds like a conspiricy and thats a major crime isnt it. I mean they worked together to defraud the company. Hmmm this goes on a lot more than you think. How long has this been going on.....Wallmart will have to lower their wages even more to cover the loss.... Posted by rick on 7/8/2008 |

No way! Walmart Employees in Georgetown would never do soemthing like that..This town is going to the dogs. What's next? Posted by Georgetown reader on 7/8/2008 |
