A new sinkhole has formed in the City of Georgetown.
The sinkhole — noticed by some last night but attended to by the city this morning — is under a traffic light at the Highmarket and Fraser Streets intersection. The same area of the city where several other sinkholes formed last year.
The cause of the sinkhole is still being investigated but one South Carolina Department of Transportation official said last night’s heavy rains may be to blame.
The city received several inches of rain in the slow moving thunderstorms Tuesday.
The Georgetown Times has left messages for Mayor Jack Scoville. Other city leaders are currently in a meeting and are unable to answer calls.
According to Georgetown resident Lee Padgett, another small sinkhole formed in the 600 block of Duke Street last week. It is being repaired by the city.

The National Transportation Safety Board is recommending lowering the legal blood alcohol content limit for drivers from .08 percent to .05 percent. They say it will decrease the number of traffic fatalities. Do you agree with this idea?
