GHS student charged with inappropriately touching teacher

Published on 10/13/2008

A female Georgetown High School staff member filed a report with Georgetown police Friday stating she was touched inappropriately by a male student.
The teacher said the incident occurred during the 4th block class Thursday as she was collecting worksheets from students who did not finish their work on time. She said the student - whose age is not on the report - started “rubbing her shoulder and arm in a caressing manner.” She said his actions “made her very uncomfortable,” the report states.
When questioned by police, the student reportedly admitted to touching the teacher but claims he was joking.
The student was charged with simple assault and battery and was suspended from school.

Wow, Do you know the girl personally? Do you know that nothing happened to her? Were you even at the school when it happened? Those are some questions you should ask yourself before you try to pull the Georgetown vs. Waccamaw card.

I think it's unanimous, Jabo is not playing with a full deck! I apologize for him.

By the way, knowing that for the sake of argument, someone might state that this teacher thinks the issue (of students and teachers being involved .... of any adult being involved with a student) is funny, I'll respond to that also. Of course not. It's sick and sad. What I find to be funny is how quick one was to blame some teachers for being provocative around students rather than considering that the student should keep his hands to himself. I've never seen a teacher dress or act inappropriately toward a student here - anywhere for that matter (and you should have peace in knowing that this is the case if you do have children). Yes, it does happen as we've seen on the news, but the teachers I know personally in this district are good people, people with firm religious and moral beliefs, and they protect your children and deserve that same respect and protection. You'd have to walk in a teacher's shoes also to know why it's funny to think they are dressing to tantalize students. You've actually seen this? I never have. After what a teacher does all day, many of us don't even have the energy to dress to tantalize an adult after 4:00 !

When I read this article, my first thought was simply that the teacher did exactly what should have been (and probably too often isn't) done. Good for her. Then, I read the responses and just laughed at a couple. I am sorry to say that, but it's true. First, to the parent who practically blames the teacher, there's a great editorial you might want to read about teachers written by Dr. Brad Morris. Second, and actually this was my first reaction, you have to be kidding. Yes, there are cases in the news where a few teachers with problems have had sex with students, but ... I'm still laughing. I'm sorry. We care about and for your children. We do very much. Otherwise, we'd not be in this field. Trust me, the pay and summers off do not even begin to compensate for what we do. If you think a teacher here is out to tease and tantalize students, gosh, if I was a parent with that concern, I'd probably just have to keep my child away from all those "sexy dressing" temptations and see if I could do a better job teaching my child at home. I honestly have not seen any of my peers dressed for Victoria's Secret or even close. here are some very attractive teachers in our district (male and female), but they don't flaunt it for students or even for peers at work. The teachers are professional in their actions. All I see daily dress very conservatively and some very conservatively and comfortably in order to be on their feet all day and do all that has to be done. Personally, I'm lucky to get to school dressed period (in my comfortable conservative wardrobe) as I'm always rushing after staying up late doing work for your child's lessons. I'm well covered though, and I VERY SERIOUSLY (laughing again) doubt the students are thinking, "Oooh sexy." I've never seen a peer walking "provocatively" around students and certainly not talking provocatively. I just can't stop laughing. I know a lot of teachers, and the last thing we want when the bell rings is your child ... :) We've taught, protected, and helped him / her for 8 hours already. It's your turn. Then again, many teachers even put in extra hours to help the students who struggle ... to HELP them - not seduce them with provocative walkin' and talkin' ... To the person who said something to the effect of this is another reason his / her children aren't educated. Is your child uneducated? Have you helped? I guess I'd better get off the soap box and work on some lesson plans for your children. Actually, I don't think my lesson plans are for your children, because in all my years teaching, I've never met a parent who was remotely less than supportive and appreciative. Oh, in response to another comment, it HAS happened to a male teacher also in the past, and it was reported.

I KNOW THAT I AM WORRIED ABOUT MY CHILD IN SCHOOL AS MOST PARENTS ARE. JUST LIKE THE INCIDENT ON THE SCHOOL BUS THANK GOD THERE WERE CAMERAS THERE. I THINK THAT ALL CLASSROOMS SHOULD ALSO HAVE CAMERAS IN THEM SO THAT WHEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS THE PROPERTY AUTHORITIES CAN LOOK AND SEE EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED. I THINK THE TEACHER DID RIGHT BY REPORTING THIS. HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF THIS HAPPENED TO YOU.

How did you conclude that nothing happend to this student? Do you have the inside on this one? Do tell.

As reported in the police blotter 9/30/08... * While running a drug sniffing dog through the parking lot of Waccamaw High Sept. 22, the dog alerted on a Land Rover belonging to a 17-year-old female student. After summoning the teen to the parking lot, deputies searched the vehicle and found a small bag of what is believed to be marijuana. She was given a ticket charging her with simple possession of marijuana and must appear in court Oct. 13.

Trust me, uniforms are not the answer - they just cause more events of this nature.

First & foremost he was wrong. But what made him try this teacher, did anyone else see this? There is so much underhanded things g on in these schools today until u just don't know who to believe. Some teachers provoke students, by the way they talk, walk & dress. That's why everyone should have on uniforms. But we as parents don't think it's good. step back & look @ the big picture.

Posted by High School MOM on 10/15/2008

WOW: Who are you referring to about the marijuana? Name not necessary, just a description. The most recent "parking lot find"?

Posted by Curious on 10/15/2008

We don't know the circumstances of the event or how the whole thing played out because we were not there to witness it. I rarely if ever touch my students--- only a pat on the shoulder at most and I don't let them hug me. I try very hard to maintain distance because of situations like this. If the teacher in question filed a report I am sure she did so with the knowledge and support of her principal and because she was truly uncomfortable and feared a possible continuance of the actions.

"Are you kidding me", she could have said "take your hands of me and go sit down". The article says he rubbed her arm and shoulder. Sounds more like a class clown than some miscreant who assaulted and battered anyone. You do realize that it is not uncommon for young female teachers to have sex with their students, don't you? Just read or watch the news.

Posted by Jabo on 10/14/2008

Jabo, you sound ignorant. Please tell us how the teacher could have handled the situation differently.....she didn't charge the student, she only filed a report...the student asked for that charge...but i still would like to know how she could have handled this differently

Posted by Are You Kidding Me on 10/14/2008

if this had been a female student and male teacher...would it have been reported?...One can assume it most definitely would not have ended in suspension and charges filed....Once again gender biased politics rears its existence.

While it is certainly proper to charge this young man and let the Family Court sort the whole thing out, a closer eye needs to be kept on all those who choose to involve themselves with youngers too. Schools, churches, scouts, recreation programs and the like are traditional hiding places for pedophiles. Sad to say, churches are too. So-called "Youth Ministers" have preyed on children (including here in Georgetown) quite regularly, often without anything being done about it. Coaches, teachers and principals too. There was even a former school board member here in Georgetown who engaged in this sort of "inappropriate" behavior. So everyone, please keep a sharp eye out. And again, it is good that the kid was charged. Adults should be too, just like that guy who was exposed himself at the girl's baseball game (who will likely claim he didn't know the zipper was broken).

Good that it was reported. Good that an example was made of the young man and that he and his classmates will hopefully learn to keep to themselves. I also hope the young man will likewise not hesitate in the future to report inappropriate contact from women against his person to the police. Same for statements directed his way by women which contain sexual innuendo. It's a goose/gander type of thing. The girls need to be schooled in this just as much as the boys do.

But a student @ Waccamaw can be caught with marijuana and nothing happens to her?

Posted by Wow on 10/14/2008

One would hope that a high school teacher could have handled this situation, which appears to be rather innocent, in a different manner. Charge the kid with assault and battery? Absurd. No wonder the schools aren't educating the kids.

Maybe the student was joking, maybe he wasn't. Good for her (the teacher) to report it. It's sad, but in today's day you have to practice good old C.Y.A.
