Georgetown’s Mitney Project will receive a $99,000 federal grant, it was announced Tuesday.
The Mitney Project was formed to revitalize and bring needed improvements to Georgetown’s West End.
Similar grants, part of the federal Recovery Act, were awarded to other organizations around the state, including: Have Faith Community Development Corporation in Alcolu, Salkehatchie Arts and the Williamsburg County Business Development Center.
Manning is receiving the largest South Carolina grant — $250,000.
The grants are  to help start or expand rural businesses in rural areas.
Mitney Project founder Barbara Huell said she learned about the grant when contacted by a reporter Tuesday.
She said the Mitney Project has also received a $20,000 grant from the Frances P Bunnelle Foundation which — combined with a $5,000 grant from Rotary International — will be used to create a computer lab for children in the West End.
