Chris Knight kept the Georgetown American Legion baseball alive in the fight for the League II championship on Tuesday.
Knight belted a three-run homer in the fifth inning and added an RBI double in the seventh as Post 114 scored a 7-6 win over Conway at Waccamaw High School.
"Chris carried us," Waccamaw coach Jeff Gregory said. "It was a big win. We had to have this game if we wanted to try and keep pace with Lake City."
Georgetown (9-6, 5-4 League II) has three games remaining as the American Legion regular season enters its closing stage. Post 114 will play at home against Lake City on July 8 and at Lake City on July 10 before wrapping things up at Murrells Inlet on July 11.
At press time, Lake City was atop the league standings with only one conference loss. Lake City has defeated Georgetown twice this season, winning 7-3 on June 25 and 7-5 on June 30.
"We still have a shot at a League Championship, but we have to play well," Gregory said. "We have a few days off before our next game and we're going to schedule some practices and try to get some work in. We don't want to be rusty when we come back."
Josh McElwee's RBI single gave Georgetown a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Tuesday, but Conway rallied and held a 4-1 advantage going into the bottom of the fifth.
Trey Altman's RBI single got Post 114 back to within two and Knight's three-run shot put them ahead 5-4.
"We've gotten a lot of our runs this season from homers," Gregory said. "From top to bottom, anyone in our lineup is capable of hitting one out. When you have that kind of power, you feel like you're always capable of coming back."
Conway tied the contest at 5-5 in the sixth, but Georgetown responded in its half of the seventh. Knight's run-scoring double made it a 6-5 game and Cody Byrdic tacked on an insurance run for Post 114 with a sacrifice fly.
"Our offense is not yet back to where it was at the start of the summer," Gregory said. "It's been frustrating at times.
"In (American Legion) you're playing the same teams over and over during the course of the season. It's easy to lose focus.
"We have to regroup over the next few days and get ready to close out the (regular season). We want to finish strong."
Zack Hagaman started for Georgetown and worked 5 2/3 innings. McElwee went the rest of the way in relief and was credited with the win."
