Eric Sanders' two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning was the difference as the Waccamaw junior American Legion baseball team opened the playoffs with a 5-4 win against Marlboro County on Wednesday.

Ahead 1-0 in the best-of-three set, Waccamaw was scheduled to continue the series on Thursday at Marlboro County.

"You always want to win the first game," Waccamaw coach Jeff Gregory said. "We had a tough loss on Tuesday (a 9-5 setback against Conway in a tiebreaking game for the League II championship). But we put that behind us and did what we needed to do."

James Pegram finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs for Waccamaw and Aaron Bishop was 2-for-2.

Justin Rooney picked up the win, working five innings and striking out six. Rooney improved his record to 3-1 on the season. He also has two saves.

"Justin did a great job for us," Gregory said. "He's been doing that all season."

CHESTERFIELD 13, GEORGETOWN 3: Chesterfield scored six runs in the second inning to break the game open and take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three playoff series.

Georgetown committed three of its six total errors in the second inning and four of Chesterfield's run in the frame came with two outs.

"The errors were our undoing," Georgetown coach Mike Johnson said. "You can't make that many mistakes and expect to win in the playoffs. We've got to bounce back and play better."

Rodney Beach finished 2-for-3 and scored two runs for Georgetown and Zack Moore had one hit and one RBI.

Georgetown (9-7) and Chesterfield were schedule to play the second game in their playoff set on Thursday.

I'm proud of this team - go Post 114
