Georgetown High standout Dante Simmons has signed a letter of intent to attend Clinton Junior College next season to play basketball.
Simmons, a 6-2 swingman who averaged 17.6 points and seven rebounds for Georgetown last season, said he aims to improve his grades at the junior college in hopes of reaching a four-year school.
"What really impressed us about Dante was his basketball IQ," said Clinton coach Donald Payton. "He seems like a gym rat who always plays hard but remains calm on the court and stays in control.
"Dante knows where the other players are and makes good decisions."
Payton saw Simmons and the Bulldogs in a Christmas tournament in Sumter. He invited the Georgetown senior to the campus for a workout prior to offering him a scholarship.
Simmons' mother, Doris D. Simmons, says Clinton Junior College requires its students to study religion.
"I am very happy with the spiritual aspect of the school," she said. It is affiliated with the AME church.
Georgetown High basketball coach Stitch Walker said he was impressed with the school's family atmosphere. "They keep an eye on you there," he added.
Simmons says the junior college school will give him an opportunity to work on his ball-handling, jump shooting and defense.
His brother, junior Avery Evans, will return to the Bulldogs varsity next season along with other veteran starters including Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard, Devin Grant and Justin Davis.
