Police blotter: Woman says she was duped by psychic

Published on 7/28/2009

Information about these cases was compiled from incident reports filed by Georgetown and Andrews police and county deputies.

A Pawleys Island woman claims she was duped out of thousands of dollars by a psychic she visited on several occasions.
The woman told deputies she began seeing the psychic in September of last year. Between then and December she visited the psychic four or five times and paid her $5,139.
The woman said during visits in October, the psychic told her because of the way she spent money in the past, she would have to “cleanse” her money. The psychic also said if the woman did not continue her visits, she would possibly be placed in a mental institution.
In December, the psychic-visitor had the psychic a check for $5,000  — a partial payment for the $25,000 she was being charged. Soon after, she decided she did not want to make the payment, so she canceled the check and ceased contact with the psychic.
The psychic told deputies all the payments she received were for services rendered although she was unable to say how many hours she spent with the woman nor was she able to provide an hourly rate.
She said  she would be willing to try to settle the “misunderstanding” with her client but had no idea how to reach her.

Forcible rape
A 16-year-old Pawleys Island boy is accused of raping an 11-year-old girl.
The incident was reported  July 21, although the alleged crime took place in May.
According to the mother of the girl, her daughter said she had sex with the teen. She claims the activity was consensual.
She said on one occasion she snuck out the house and he drove her to Waccamaw Middle School where the sex took place.
On another occasion it was in the boy’s home.
The investigation continues.

Recovered vehicle
A Georgetown woman walked inside the Cash-O-Matic in the 200 block of South Fraser Street Thursday afternoon, leaving her keys inside her vehicle.
While in the store, someone took the Ford Taurus. Police were given a description of the vehicle and an officer spotted it in Maryville near Pennyroyal Road.
He initiated a traffic stop and the driver and a passenger jumped out and ran into the woods.
The driver was apprehended and charged with motor vehicle theft.
The passenger got away.

Heroin possession
While on patrol early Monday, a police office noticed a vehicle at the intersection of Duke and Cleland Streets that was not moving even though there was no traffic.
He stopped and walked up to the car and saw a woman laying across the center console.
He woke the woman up and she seemed “very disoriented,” the report states.
The woman said she had been working for six straight days and that’s why she fell asleep.
The officer asked and was given permission to search the vehicle. He noticed a panel near the gear shift was loose, so he opened it and found a bag containing three hypodermic needles and other items  classified as drug paraphernalia.
Also found was some aluminum foil wrapped around a powder substance believed  to be heroin.
The woman said she did not know the items were in her car, although she admitted to being a former heroin user.
She said she completed rehab last month.
She was arrested for possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Shoplifter confesses
Police were called to Wal Mart because of a shoplifting Friday afternoon.
An employee said he saw a 47-year-old Conway man place a GPS device in his pocket.
The worker watched the man until he was exiting the store.
The man told police he was taking the GPS to his girlfriend as a gift.
“He stated he made a stupid mistake,” the report states.
After placing the man in custody, he was searched and police found a set of headphones and instructions for an MP3 player in his clothing.
It’s believed he stole the MP3 player but it was not found while at the store.
Once he was at the hail, the MP3 player was found in his shoe.
“(He) stated this is where he keeps his MP3 player,” the officer wrote. “I asked (him) to produce a receipt for the item. He could not.”

Unruly customers
The owner of Newton’s store in Andrews called police July 15 to report four customers inside the business who were using profanity and appeared to be intoxicated.
The four left before police arrived but officers were given a description of their vehicle which was pulled over a short time later.
The officer smelled beer inside the car and asked the driver if he had been drinking. He said he had consumed two beers.
He gave the officer permission to search his vehicle and two open  cans of beer were located.
The man was taken into custody for having open containers in his car.

Accidental gunshot
A Georgetown man was treated for minor injuries after accidentally shooting himself in the leg July 23.
The man said he used his 9mm in the woods that day to shoot a Copperhead snake. After returning home, he was unloading the gun on his front porch when it discharged.
The bullet hit a brick wall and fragments ricocheted and struck his leg in four places.
He was transported to the hospital by a neighbor.
