Davious Chestnut made plays on offense and defense as Carvers Bay High defeated Georgetown 26-6 at Big Bear Stadium Friday night.
Chestnut, a junior, intercepted two passes in the first half and Carvers Bay (2-0) jumped to an early lead over the Bulldogs (0-1). His 32-yard pass reception from quarterback Arlington Scott put the Bears up 14-0 and his 74-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter broke open a surprisingly close, hard-hitting game between the county rivals.
"This is a rivalry," said Carvers Bay coach Nate Thompson. "Any time that Georgetown and us get together, they are going to play their best ball. Tyronne (Davis) had them ready to play."
The game was the first for Davis as Georgetown's new head coach, a former defensive coordinator at Carvers Bay, who has promised to emphasize fundamentals and toughness for the Bulldogs. And until Chestnut's big touchdown run, the Bulldogs stood toe to toe with the Bears.
"I am real, real proud of our team," Davis said. "We never quit. Our kids were really up for this game and they are hurting right now. I told them that we grew as a football team tonight."

quick 8-0 lead on a 4-yard run by Karim Gamble and a trick-play point after touchdown by Clayton Geathers with 7:04 left in the first quarter. The Bears lined up as if to kick the point but caught the Bulldogs napping. Chestnut's touchdown reception with 32 seconds left in the half put the Bears up 14-0.
Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard caught a 21-yard pass from Danny Thompson on the final play of the first half and the Bulldogs trailed 14-6.
That late touchdown send the Bulldogs into half-time with a spark and it carried over to the second half.
A 50-yard pass to Gamble gave the Bears a first-and-goal at the 4-yard line early in the third quarter, but Georgetown stopped them on downs and took over. After a Bulldog punt, Carvers Bay fumbled and Georgetown was out of the hole.
Stephon Leak, Daunte Gardner and Anthony Green all carried the football effectively for Georgetown against the Carvers Bay defense. The Bulldogs' most serious threat came in the third quarter when the frustrated Bears were called for three 15-yard penalties. Georgetown turned the ball over on downs at the 26-yard line.
On the next play, Chestnut broke cleanly off tackle and raced 74 yards to the end zone to put the Bears ahead 20-6 with 7:32 left in the game.
Clayton Geathers scored on a 14-yard run with 3:04 left in the game to account for the final 20-point margin.
Chestnut finished the night with 148 yards on 14 carries and Geathers had 39 yards on eight carries. Overall, the Bears rushed for 234 yards.
"There are things we've got to do, the little things, that aren't there yet," said coach Thompson. We are an inexperienced team and when we got the lead some of our players thought the game was over. They realize now that they've got to play. We knew that we would have to wear them down."
Thompson said the Bears showed improvement from last week's season opening game against Marion. "There are still things to work on," he said, "but we made fewer mistakes on defense."
Georgetown will entertain Andrews this Friday at 7 p.m. and Carvers Bay will go on the road for the first time, traveling to Mullins for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
