Once the workers of ArecelorMittal Georgetown — the local steel mill — returned to work in April, the unemployment rate in Georgetown County dropped. The jobless rate — according to figures released Friday by the SC Employment Security Commission — dropped from 12.8 percent in March to 11.6 percent last month. Another factor in the drop is the spring is when summer businesses begin hiring for the season. That may be good news, but not much. The rate is still more than twice as bad as it was in April, 2008 when the rate was 5.9 percent. The state average hit 11.5 percent in April, breaking a 26-year-old record. It’s the 14th straight month of increasing unemployment figures in the state which now has nearly 253,000 jobless people.
