Waccamaw's Warriors won over Lincoln High School of McClellanville Wednesday, Dec. 9 at home in Pawleys Island.
The boys varsity final score was Waccamaw 59, Lincoln 32.
For the girls varsity, the score was Waccamaw 35, Lincoln 13.
In both games -- as well as in the game Tuesday against Andrews -- the Lincoln Yellow Jackets fought hard and stayed in the game the full period.
Nonetheless, the Lincoln Yellow Jackets just weren't able to sting the Warriors too badly.
Girls game
Coach Jessica Pressley said the Lady Warriors played well.
"We were a lot better as a unit," she said. "The team's unity is starting to come about."
"We did much better on rebounds. We worked on that all day at practice," she said.
Ashley Czechner really started out well, Pressley said.
"The guards were all evenly important. Everyone got their hands on the ball.
"Rebounding was the thing I was most impressed with," she said. "I think maybe they're finally understanding it."
A new defense worked well, too, she said. "They all seemed to like it and understand it."
The Waccamaw girls had 41 rebounds as a team.
Amber Williams had 7 points and 7 rebounds. Yazzi Bennani 6 points, Julia Bradshaw 6 and 3 steals, Kayla Gulley 4 and 7 rebounds, Laquana Green 4, Venetia Grant 2, Rachel McClellan 2 and Ashley Czechner 2 and 7 rebounds.
Boys game
"I thought we started really flat," Waccamaw boys varsity coach Mike Quinn said Wednesday. "It took a while to get in sync. We weren't making the shots. It takes too long to get going offensively."
At the half, the score was Waccamaw 28, Lincoln 22.
During the break, Quinn said the players made some adjustments. He told them to take their time, look at the basket.
"I'm really happy with the effort in the second half," he said.
In the third period, Waccamaw scored 21 points to just 2 for Lincoln. In the final quarter, the Warriors scored 10 to 8 for Lincoln.
The final was 59 to 32 for Waccamaw.
Sammy Green scored 11 points for the Warriors; Joey Alba had 13; Alex Jessmore 14; James Williams 8; Tevin Gardner 8; Dejan Frazier 3; Stuart Hooks 2.
Green made two 3-point shots and Alba had one.
For Lincoln, A. Green had one 3-point shot.
Quinn said "Everybody got some good minutes tonight."
For Lincoln, he said, Coach DeWitt "doesn't have the depth he's had in past years.
"Lincoln always comes out and gives a good effort. Coach does a good job with them," Quinn said.
Quinn was pleased "with how we took care of the basketball. The guys made extra passes. They tried to get everybody involved in the offense."
"Sammy (Green) really did a great job running the plays," Quinn said. And, he had 5 assists.
Alba had 9 assists, and Jessmore had 5.
"They really play unselfishly. They're trying to get everybody involved. It's really good to see."
