Four area teams are set to begin the Class AA soccer playoffs this week.

The top-ranked Class AA team in the state, the Waccamaw girls have earned the top seed in the Lower State bracket and capped an undefeated season by defeating second-ranked Bishop England 2-1 last week. The win gave the Warriors (14-0) a season sweep over the Bishops this season - Waccamaw won the first game 1-0 on Apr. 12.

The Bishops defeated the Warriors 1-0 in the Lower State championship last season, and the teams appear headed for a rematch this year. This time though, the game would be on Waccamaw's turf.

The Warriors have received a bye in the first round and will start the playoffs on Wednesday against the winner of the Andrews/Andrew Jackson game - a contest slated today at Andrew Jackson.

Waccamaw's boys team finished the regular season 16-4-1 and are ranked No. 2 in the state in Class AA. The Warriors are the second seed in the Lower State and start the playoffs on Tuesday at home against Ridgeland.

Waccamaw and Bishop England are also favored to meet in the Lower State boys finals - BE has defeated the Warriors the last two years.

Andrews' boys team is seeded eighth in the Lower State and starts the playoffs at home on Tuesday against Dillon.

Clash of Carolinas

Waccamaw High forward Justin Blomdahl has been chosen to help represent South Carolina in the 2008 Clash of the Carolinas All-Star soccer match.

The game features 18 of the top seniors from North and South Carolina and will be held Saturday, July 12 at Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island.

Track and field

Justin Duncan and Marcus Pope of Andrews combined to win five events in the Class AA track and field qualifying meet Saturday at Bishop England High.

Duncan won the 110-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump; and Pope won the 400 and 400 hurdles.

Waccamaw's Eric Sparkman won three events -- the 100, 200 and high jump -- and the Warriors' Steven Canada won the 800.

Carvers Bay's Daniel Bromell won the discus at the Class A Lower State meet at Sumter High.

The Bear girls 400-meter relay team of Eurania Dennison, Asia Grimmage, Jasmine Washington, Shakelya Moultrie also won a first place.

The top four performers in Class AA and A events qualified for this weekend's state meet at Spring Valley High in Columbia.

Georgetown's LaQuan Priest won the triple jump in the Class AAA qualifying meet at Lower Richland High.

Unlike the Class A and AA meets, the AAA and AAAA meets combined Upper State and Lower State at the qualifying events, where athletes qualified for Saturday's state championship meet at Spring Valley High.
