"True Grit" was among the last few films John Wayne made.
He and the female lead didn't give up as they sought to bring the killers of a young woman's father to justice -- hence the title of the movie.
Waccamaw's girls' varsity basketball squad has a lot of grit and determination, too.
"They play hard all the time," coach Jessica Pressley said after Friday's 48-31 loss to Hanahan.
"We had a lot of good open opportunities, but they weren't falling in."
"We were trying to switch up instead of man to man.
"Everyone I put in played really good," Pressley continued. "But, it's the story of our season.
"Things just didn't go our way."
Yazzi Bennani led the Lady Warriors with 11 points. Other scorers were Amber Williams 8, Rachel McClellan 1; Ashley Czechner 2; Julia Bradshaw 2; Kayla Gulley 5; and Jess Maybank 2.
Hanahan's Hawks were led by Giselle Broughton with 11 points; B. Liner 10; Tenesha Bethel 9; and Megan Smalls 9.
Waccamaw has four games left on its schedule, Pressley said. They host Andrews on Tuesday.
