Waccamaw High School’s Hunter Brininger will have a unique opportunity as a member of Limestone College’s very first football team.
Brininger signed with the Gaffney school on Wednesday morning. The Saints will take to the gridiron in 2014.
“It means a lot to me because I’ll be the first at the starting position,” Brininger said. “I can get the first pancake [block] and I can get the first anything.”
Brininger didn’t play football in middle school, he joined the Waccamaw program as a freshmen. It wasn’t until his junior year that he realized that football could get him into college.
“I worked harder to improve my grades and hit the weight room harder,” Brininger said. “It’s very exciting. It means all the hard work I’ve put in has finally paid off.”
Brininger ended up being a three-year starter for the Warriors.
“Hunter’s worked extremely hard over the years, he’s progressed, he’s gotten more confidence from doing other sports,” Waccamaw coach Tyronne Davis said. “This is a great accomplishment for him.”
Brininger is also a member of the Waccamaw wrestling team. He hopes to cap off his senior season with an individual Lower State title in a few weeks, and possibly a state title.
“It’s just you and the other person on the mat,” Brininger said. “If you lose, it’s on you, you can’t blame your team. And if you win it’s all you.”
He’s only lost one match this season.
“I’ve been working on trying to get moves down and it just paid off,” Brininger said.
He wants to study education at Limestone, with an eye on being a phys ed teacher and football and wrestling coach.
Davis said Limestone is a great opportunity for Brininger.
“I think by giving him that year to prepare, to get bigger, faster, stronger, along with adjusting to college and the classes, it’s a good opportunity for him.”
Brininger will be joined at Limestone by Caleb Hughes of Georgetown High School, and three players from Socastee High.
“There’s not a lot of pressure right now for them, starting the program and not playing until next year, it gives them a chance to build a team bond,” Davis said.
