Waccamaw's Warriors stung the Yellow Jacket basketball team Friday night -- but not the ones from Georgetown County.

The Pawleys Island team won over the Yellow Jackets of Lincoln High School in McClellanville by a score of 61 to 17.

"I'm very happy with the performance of every single player on the team," Waccamaw Coach Mike Quinn said.

"They played at a high level of intensity on both ends of the floor, and played unselfishly. At any time you can do those things, you have good results.

"It's a great way to start the season," Quinn said. "I hope we can continue the momentum through the next round of the tournament."

In that next round on Monday, Waccamaw faces the Georgetown Bulldogs at 8:30 p.m. at the Georgetown gym.

In the coming weeks, Quinn said, the team will work on the offense and spacing. "We need to make sure we play all the way through and run the options," he said.

For Friday's game, Joey Alba made an extra pass and gave up opportunities to help his teammates. He had eight assists.

"I don't think last year he had more than five," Quinn said. "That's a major accomplishment."

"All the players did well tonight."

"Sam (Greene) and Tevin (Gardner) scored the most points.

"The post men really passed the ball well inside the paint," Quinn said.

Looking ahead

Over the summer, the Warriors started with a three-week practice and camp session.

Quinn said each player made a strong commitment.

"We had a 6 a.m. practice to start off the season and this set the stage to show what kids really wanted to be part of our program. Ironically, not one kid was late.

"Captains are all my seniors. Tevin G, Samuel, Alex all started last season and contributed in all areas. These three starters gained valuable experience last year and are much improved," Quinn said.

"Dejan played a lot last season as a freshman and is much more comfortable with our system.

"James Williams also played a lot last season and can play a variety of positions.

"Key additions are Joey Alba who is a very good scorer, both in the paint and on the perimeter," he continued.

"Jerome Maybank at 6'6" has a tremendous upside to him and is developing into the center position nicely after a great football season.

"Newcomers are Joey Walton, Dyshan Frasier and Brad Adams.

"Our biggest challenge is to compete in our region and improve from last year's 1-9 record," Quinn said. "Our goal in our program is to take players that have good character and we can help them succeed both on and off the court."
