Waccamaw Elementary faculty and staff expressed their deepest appreciation on Thursday to a group that helps ensure the school runs smoothly -- school volunteers.

"Volunteers are a part of our stakeholders, both here and in the community," said Vervatine Reid, WES assistant principal. "They play a major role in ensuring our children receive a sound education."

One parent/volunteer, E'Lane Rutherford, remarked, "Volunteering is at the heart of who we are, the heart of our community."

The "thanks" expressed by the Waccamaw family to all its community and parent volunteers was for all they did to contribute to the school for this academic year.

The Waccamaw Volunteer of the Year is Joan Murren. Murren is a retired businesswoman who averages six hours a week in volunteering at the school.

She has been instrumental in helping with the first-grade book room.

The collection now exceeds 2,000 books, and she organized and labeled the entire collection.

"It is so refreshing to know such a civic-minded individual, especially when she has not had any of her relatives attend the school system," says Regina Walker, first-grade teacher at Waccamaw.

"We feel so fortunate to have her as part of our day."

Many of Waccamaw's volunteers contribute in a myriad of ways.

The volunteers "acted as tutors to help reinforce what we teach, and others helped with clerical work," reported a statement of thanks issued by the school. "They also helped to make our art shows, musical productions and fundraisers a great success."

In addition to Murren, the school also would like to thank the businesses in the Georgetown area that help make them a success.

Those businesses are: Plantation Printing; Piggly Wiggly; Plantation Federal Bank; Bank of America; Georgetown Kraft Credit Union; Elizabeth Taylor Satterfield Interior Design, Inc.; Community Florist; Lazy Fish; The Original Hammock Shop; The Candy Cottage; As for Me and My House; Blue Flame Art; Kudzu Bakery; Bistro 217; Litchfield Books; La Donna's Inc.; The Chocolate and Coffee House; Shabby Abby; Plum Pretty; Splash; She Sells Sea Shells; Gray Man Frame Shop; Party Shop; The Audubon Shop & Gallery; and Simply Divine.
