Tony Dorsett is heading up a golf tournament that promises to be fun and to help raise significant money for AMI Kids Georgetown.
The Tony Dorsett AMIkids Georgetown Kids First Golf Classic will be held at Caledonia Golf and Fish Club at Pawleys Island on May 13 and 14.
Joining Dorsett for the festivities will be fellow NFL great Jim Stuckey, astronaut Charlie Duke and many more.
These folks and a host of local supporters are out to have a good time, but more importantly they want to raise money and raise awareness for AMI Kids Georgetown.
In operation for years, AMI Kids -- formerly known as the Georgetown Marine Institute -- gives kids a second chance at life. And the results are spectacular and life-changing.
The kids are put into a caring environment with tough but fair discipline. They learn academics and they learn life lessons.
Last year, Dorsett toured the campus off East CCC Road in southern Georgetown County. He was impressed by what he saw.
The kids who led Dorsett and others on a tour of the old, rustic facility talked freely about their lives. They admitted they'd made mistakes, and they credited the staff and the program at AMI Kids for helping them turn their lives in a different and better direction.
New campus, new programs
The long-term goal for staff and board members of AMI Kids is to build a new $3 million campus on land in northwestern Georgetown County.
Not only would the new place provide updated living and learning quarters for the boys, but it would also include additional dormitories and classrooms for girls.
Board chairman Wally Johnson and others want to expand to provide a successful program for 48 girls, just as they do now for about 30 boys.
The new facility would have a capacity of 48 boys and 48 girls in separate dormitories.
For Dorsett, Johnson and many others it's a simple proposition: Play some golf with some outstanding folks, have a great time, and by the way help save some kids from what might otherwise be a dismal future.

Video tour
Last year when Dorsett came to Georgetown, the newspaper posted several videos of his tour, comments on AMI Kids, and life in the pros.
You can watch the videos on the newspaper Web site and read the stories from 2010.
