It happens every four years. An extra day for leap year, the Summer Olympic games and campaign signs are reported stolen.
The latest case involves the Georgetown County Auditor's race between Republican newcomer Rod Stalvey and incumbent Democrat Linda Mock.
A report filed with the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office Monday states a witness, Glen Wilson, saw Stalvey's campaign signs being removed from the roadside on Petigru Road in Pawleys Island. Wilson provided a description of the vehicle and a license tag number.
It is the policy of the Georgetown Times not to release names of people who are accused of a crime but have not been officially charged.According to Stalvey, he may have lost as many as 100 signs on the Waccamaw Neck. However, since he had volunteers placing some of them, he is unsure where each one was located.
He said he was informed the vehicle Wilson reported seeing belongs to a Pawleys Island resident who is part of the Georgetown County Democratic Party.
"While I have been out and about placing my signs throughout the county, not once have I thought or considered removing anyone's signs. It really is pitiful to have someone as a member of a political party ... to deny any individual the right to advertise a political candidacy for public office in this way," Stalvey said in an e-mail to the Georgetown Times.
Mock said she does not condone anyone taking anyone's signs and had no part in the alleged removal of Stalvey's signs.
"I have had some of my own signs taken. You just know it's going to happen," she said, adding she was told some juveniles were seen taking signs over the weekend.
When asked about the vehicle Wilson reported seeing, Mock referred the question to County Democratic Party Chairman Jamie Sanderson.
He said the person being accused spent part of the weekend putting signs up but did not remove any signs.
"We would never condone taking other people's signs and we do not engage in that type of thing. It's childish and will not happen on this watch," Sanderson said. "We are not engaging in these petty politics."
Wilson said Tuesday he stands by his story.
"I saw them pulling signs out of the ground," he said.
Wilson said Stalvey's signs were there when he first passed by but by the time he turned around -- which, he said, took about a minute -- Stalvey's signs were gone.
"A theft is a theft. It doesn't matter if it's on private or public property," he said.
According to Wilson and the incident report, the signs were on the state right-of-way. The deputy informed Stalvey there was very little law enforcement can do because anything left of the right-of-way is considered abandoned property.
Stalvey said Tuesday he disagrees with that conclusion because there are always things on the side of the road in the right-of-way. He used the Sheriff's Office radar detector signs as an example.
"I wonder if I can hook up to those radar readers and drag them to my house. They have nice solar panels that I can use," Stalvey said.
Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Neil Johnson said state law allows law enforcement devices and other things such as speed limit and other traffic signs in the right-of-way.
Director Boyd Johnson of the Georgetown County Planning Department said county law prohibits signs from being in the right-of-way and county workers have been collecting signs that were in violation of the rule.
"We are not throwing them away. They are piling up behind our building," he said.

Ah, finally an intelligent question from a Marty supporter. The point that I attempted to make in my very first post, and have subsequently given proof of my accusations, is that Marty wastes tax payer money fighting what ONLY he sees as a crime. Not just big crime, but small things such as ~$0.70 added to your phone bill to pay for 911 equipment and radios, pissed that he got kicked off the air on Time Warner Cable because he violated the rules, and just recently caused many workers at City Hall chase around fulfilling his FOIA request for a sign he thought was illegal. This is petty stuff. And he lost all of them. He claims to know the law, but since he can't seem to win a lawsuit, he obviously does not. He should stop wasting your and my tax money trying to politically stab those he does not like. As far has his website goes, it contains some truthful whistleblowing. It mostly contains crap that has very little semblance of truth and is close enought to be considered tabloid in nature. Perez Hilton would blush and some of the gossip started there. You should, too. Check out the rants by his cronie, 'ConcernedPerson'. This guy is so much an idiot that I cry to think that he may have been a product of the Georgetown school system. Its nothing but a bunch of whiners that on there looking to discount their personal enemy, whether its the Times, Paige, Ron, the Sun News, the Sheriff, Sanderson, Bush, America, etc. However, no one is allowed to speak poorly of Marty unless they use their real name. I want you to know I appreciate Marty very much. I won't use my name because no one else is using their name. I know how it works in Georgetown. Complain publically and you will be punished. Ask Joe Ford how his trip to jail was. I want no part of that. You people are proving that even now. Awww isn't it great that when we finally get Marty "no win" Tennant to be quite his "friends" swoop in to defend him? In my opinion the truth of the matter is that although Marty is loud and does a lot of talking he is of no use other than wasting taxpayer money with lawsuits he does not win. I will ask you "friends" the same question that seems to have gotten Marty to leave. How many lawsuits has Marty started and how many has he won? A number will do, not stories or weak justifications. Seriously?!? Lies?? If any of these posts were outright lies, they would be illegal and they would be removed. They are not lies. The cases I mentioned are real court cases that can be verified. Marty Tennant has not outright won any lawsuits that he has brought, with the exception of the cell tower case, I really don't have a final word on that one yet. He came on here saying his court record can be found on his site. WHERE??? Marty is the one telling lies. You are blind. You think he is helping the world and exposing great things. He is not. He just sits at the keyboard lavishing in the praise minions like you bestow. Psychologically, he just wants to feel appreciated. Socially, he's a reject. That's why he started a rumor and gossip website. He wants those who live for tabloid fact to appreciate him. Do some research on your own. You read the one site in town for the truth www.citizensreport.com and you know you cannot ignore the truth. But you also know you can come here and attack Marty with lies. The best way to deal with Marty Tennant is to simply ignore him. He has no influence. No one pays serious attention to his opinion or antics. His lawsuits are a joke. In short, he is simply irrelevant. All ego and sanctamony, nothing else. The town blow hard. As I remember, and I may be corrected on this, case 2003CP2200075 was found for the defendant (911 lawsuit). It appears as though it went all the way to the state supreme court.-----Case 1998CP2200569 versus Scana Communications was dismissed. Case 2001CP2200099 versus City of Georgetown was dismissed. Case 2001CP2200690 (Cable access channel case) was dismissed without prejudice. Case 2006CP2200870 criminal appeal dismissed. This is good stuff. Really Marty I know you have won a couple of law suits, just name a couple to silence your critics. Also by your last post it seems you delete post you do not agree with from your website? That seems a little harsh. I have to say that although I rarely agree with you I am surprised that 89 people disagreed with your first comment. 89 has to be a record. Preparing another lawsuit? It's too bad I have said nothing libelous. I have asked questions and offered opinions based upon facts. You have not yet answered those questions, and I must only surmise that you have won no lawsuits of any merit. Any time you want to open up and tell the truth, this website will be right here. Until then, feel free to re-read my posts. You have no grounds for a subpeona. Wrong yet again. Just like on Paige's sign issue. You know, the one where caused a waste of taxpayer money by issuing FOIA requests to City staff requesting the status of his sign? Sure, its your right, but was it right?
