PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. — A teenager is hospitalized and the S.C. Highway Patrol has now charged the man accused of causing the injuries.
According to S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Paul Brouthers, a 16 year old was struck by a vehicle as he was walking in Litchfield late Saturday night. The driver did not stop and a search was conducted that ended when he turned himself in Monday.
Brouthers said 18 year old Thomas Gallagher of Pawleys Island is charged with leaving the scene of a collision with personal injury.
The teen was walking on Litchfield Drive at about 11 p.m. when he was allegedly hit by Gallagher.
Bob Beebe, spokesman for Midway Fire and Rescue, said the teen was walking with at least one other person when he was hit.
Beebe said the teen suffered a closed head fracture and other injuries.
He was first taken to Waccamaw Community Hospital but was later transported to the Medical University of South Caroline.
Because the victim is a juvenile, authorities would not release his name. As a result, his condition could not be acquired.
Brouthers said investigators had limited information to work with in their search for the vehicle.
The impact did break the passenger’s side mirror from the vehicle. Brouthers said investigators used information found on the mirror to narrow down the type of vehicle involved in the incident.
