Ruth Blair honored for election service

Calling her one of the “unsung heroes of any election”, the Georgetown County Elections and Registration Office recently honored Ruth Blair of Dreamkeepers Precinct as the Poll Worker of the Year. The award is given in memory of Mattie Daniels Hemingway who helped with the elections in Georgetown Precinct 5 for more than 25 years. Blair was given the award for “epitomizing the volunteer spirit of Ms. Hemingway and all poll workers,” said Elections Director Donna Mahn. Nominations were made by poll workers themselves, and from these the final recipient was chosen by committee consisting of a member of the Hemingway family, an Elections Board member, and Mahn. Blair began serving as a Poll Worker and Precinct Clerk when she was in her early 20s, a career that now spans more then 50 years. She has seen voting move from “out under the trees” in all kinds of weather to the present-day electronic voting system. But through it all, despite the hardships, her dedication has remained strong and she is still an active precinct worker.
