Postage stamp cost increasing

The cost of mailing a one-ounce U.S. First Class piece of mail is increasing to 42 cents today for anyone who must purchase new stamps.

However, anyone with the 41 cent "Forever Stamps" can still use those until they run out.

In recent years when there was a stamp price hike, postal customers with older stamps had to purchase one-cent stamps to add to the envelope. Now the 41 cent stamps will continue to be honored although no more are being printed.

Postmaster General John Potter

spent the past few weeks urging people to purchase the Forever stamps ahead of the cost increase.

"Like the name suggests, they are good forever," Potter said.

Prices for other postal services, such as Standard Mail, Periodicals, Package Services and Special Services will also change as follows:

* First-class mail letter (2 oz.) 58 cents to 59 cents.

* First-class mail international (1 oz. to Canada and Mexico) 69 cents to 72 cents.

* First-class mail international (1 oz. to all other countries) 90 cents to 94 cents.

* Postcard 26 cents to 27 cents.

* Large envelope (2 oz.) 97 cents to $1.00

* Money orders (up to $500) $1.05 (No Change).

* Certified mail $2.65 to $2.75.
