$30,000 in jewelry

Published on 6/26/2008

The investigation is continuing into the theft of $30,000 in jewelry from Whitmire's Fine Jewelry in Pawleys Island.

The owner, John Whitmire, said the theft occurred at about 1 p.m. June 20. He said there were "two suspicious looking individuals" in the store at the time. One of them -- a man -- was about 6-foot-4 in height with a buzzed haircut who said he was a painter.

The other was a woman about 5-foot-4 with long reddish/blonde hair. Both appeared to be 20 to 25 years old.

There was a key in the lock of the cabinet from which the jewelry was stolen. So far, no arrests have been made.

A two-year-old from Lexington, Ky., vacationing in the Georgetown County portion of Garden City nearly drowned in a pool Sunday afternoon.

The report -- released today -- states EMS was called to Dolphin Road after the toddler was found by relatives facedown in a swimming pool.

The baby's mother, a registered nurse, performed CPR, and by the time deputies arrived EMS was on the scene and the toddler was OK. He was transported to the hospital to be checked out.

* More than $11,000 in cash and hundreds of dollars in tools were stolen from two barns behind a house in the 13000 block of Old Pee Dee Road.

The owner said a fireproof safe containing the cash was taken from one of the barns. Also taken was a $350 chainsaw and a $260 tiller.

Taken from the other barn was a skill saw, a tool set and three hams that were hanging to be cured.

The owner gave deputies the name of a possible suspect, but no arrests have been made.

* A 14-year-old girl said her grandmother's boyfriend raped her when she was living in their home two years ago.

The girl said the 44-year-old man walked into her bedroom and forced her to have sex while her grandmother was at work. She said she was raped by the man on two other occasions that same week.

The investigation into the allegations is continuing.

* A thief who stole a debit card from a Pawleys Island woman made it out of the state and has not been caught.

Three cars were broken into while they were parked at Bi-Lo in Pawleys Island Sunday.

The debit card was taken from one of the cars and was used in Peachtree, Ga.

A DVD player also was taken from one of the cars.

* After pulling a driver over for suspected drunk driving Saturday afternoon, a deputy asked the 45-year-old man to step out of the car but he refused.

When he was told he would forcibly be removed, the man from Mauldin, S.C., reluctantly exited the vehicle.

He told the officer he and a hitchhiker he had picked up had consumed four alcoholic drinks.

After failing a field sobriety test, the man was taken to jail, where a breathalyzer test was to be performed.

After authorities made sure the man's mouth was empty to begin the test, he said he had to use the bathroom. When he walked out he had water in his mouth so they had to wait 20 minutes before administering the test.

The officers checked the man's mouth again and it was empty, but right before the test began they saw something moving in his mouth. They then saw he had a penny in his mouth.

According to an old wives tale, a copper penny will throw off the results of a breathalyzer, but experts say that is untrue.

The man had several different mood changes and was very uncooperative. His license was taken, he was recommended for suspension and he was charged with driving under the influence and obstructing police.
