Students at the new Waccamaw Intermediate School (WIS) are combining two things they love: Reading and playing.
This Thursday, during their regular silent reading period, these 537 students will take part in the WIS Pages to Play Read-a-thon fund-raiser. After seeking out pledges for each page they read, they will keep track of pages completed during the allotted 40-minute period and then collect the pledge money.
"Every dollar you raise during the read-a-thon will go directly to the improvement of the playground and play field to make it a better environment for recess," Jennifer Kaylor with the school's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) told the students at a recent pep rally for the event.
WIS, which includes grades 4 to 6, opened at the beginning of this school year with minimal playground equipment. The school's PTO has partnered with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to make this fund-raiser possible.

Screams of excitement filled the WIS cafetorium when Splash, the Pelicans' mascot, came bounding through the crowd. He and other representatives of the team entertained the students with several games, played by students, like Pacman pickup, Dizzy Bat Relay and Baseball Player Dress Up.
Teachers even got into the action when Cindy Cuiba and Robin Krask played Tug-of-War and Scott Cook and Ken Murphy wrestled in sumo costumes.
Prizes
Kaylor told the students that prize packages for the top student in each grade who raises the most money during the read-a-thon will include a Pelicans memorabilia, a $25 gift card to BarnesandNoble.com, and one item of their choice from the WIS Gator's school store.
There is also an incentive for the class that collectively raises the most money for Pages to Play.
That class will receive a free pizza and ice cream party in the outside cafeteria courtyard and free tickets to a Pelicans game.
"Help us raise money to improve your playground," Kaylor said. "We love reading and it is important to play."
