John Bracken

John Sherwin Bracken of Pawleys Island, S.C. died on September 17, 2012 at his home of seventeen years in Pawleys Island following a serious illness.
He was born in Sharon, Pa. on June 27, 1941, the son of John William Bracken and Elizabeth Denardo Sherwin Bracken.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Knowles Bracken; a brother Rodney Bracken and his wife Sherry of Shelton, Wash.; two sisters-in-law, Sally Field of Georgetown and Donna McIntyre of New Braunfels, Texas; six nieces; one nephew; and their many family members.
After obtaining a Bachelor’s degree from Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, Mr. Bracken moved to western New York and worked for many years as a school library media specialist, teaching teachers how to use audiovisual equipment and materials while participating in union activities and local historic preservation projects.
On the first day of school in 1969, he met, and on the day after school was out, married Nancy Knowles, a first grade teacher and his wife of 43 years.
Since they both drove yellow convertibles, it was a match meant to be.
During their marriage, they travelled extensively meeting new friends and seeing the world.
Mr. Bracken’s work history included social work, bookstore and video store clerk, gate attendant at Litchfield Plantation, Brookgreen Gardens, and most recently Huntington Beach State Park.
He enjoyed meeting the visitors and sharing this beautiful area.
Mr. Bracken has supported many environmental causes including the Waccamaw Riverkeeper, South Carolina Environmental Law Project, Sierra Club, S.C. United Turtle Enthusiasts and others.
He served for many years as the local delegate to the state Sierra Club.
He has been involved in and had leadership roles in many cultural, educational, and community groups including Scholars Forum, Myrtle Beach Stamp Club, League of Women Voters, Friends of the Waccamaw and Georgetown Libraries, and the Cultural Council.
Always eager to learn and establish relationships, it was said that Mr. Bracken never met a stranger and never missed an event.
A celebration of John Bracken’s life will be held in a few weeks.

Joseph Caulder

Joseph “Joe” Evans Caulder, 65, beloved husband of JoAnn Cribb Caulder, passed away Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Born on October 20, 1946, in Dillon, he was a son of the late Joseph Caulder and the late Dollie McKenzie Caulder.
Mr. Caulder was a member of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church and worked security at International Paper Company.
He enjoyed working on cars in his spare time, going fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of Georgetown; three children, Melissa Ann Caulder of Georgetown, April Michelle Caulder of Augusta, Ga. and Ricky Cribb of Coco Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren, Kent Evans Caulder, Luke Preston, Joseph Warner, Mia Alexis Smith, Melanie Drummond and Alexandria Cribb; one sister, Tonya Slack of Texas; one brother, David Caulder of Charleston; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Thompson; and a brother, Larry Caulder.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September, 19, 2012 in the Antioch Cemetery with the Rev. Teddy Rabon officiating.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Graham Funeral Home.

Ernest Coon Jr.

Mr. Ernest L. Coon Jr., 90, of Georgetown, S.C. died Friday, September 14, 2012 at Diamond Health and Rehab in Greenville, S.C. The funeral service will be private.
Born May 13, 1922 in Columbia, S.C., Mr. Coon was the son of the late Ernest L. Coon, Sr. and Josie Murphy Coon. 
He was a graduate of McMaster School, Columbia High School, University of South Carolina, University of North Carolina and  the American Institute of Banking. 
Mr. Coon was a veteran of World War II with over three and a half years overseas service having served in Africa, Italy and France. 
He attended the Artillery Officers School in Ft. Sill, Okla. and was a retired field artillery battalion staff officer. 
He was also  a retired vice president of S.C. National Bank and retired motel operator. 
Mr. Coon was a member of Georgetown Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday School and was former Sunday School superintendent. 
He was also a Deacon, Elder, Greeter and served on numerous committees such as, Service to the Community, Missions, and Stewardship. 
Mr. Coon was former  President of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce and the Ribbon Club. 
He was a member of the Winyah Indigo Society, vice chairman of the Red Cross, vice president and executive board member of Coastal Carolina Council of Boy Scouts of America, Charleston, S.C., member of Order of The Arrow of Boy Scouts and district commissioner with Boy Scouts of America, vice president of the Lions Club, chairman of Cripple d Children’s Society of Georgetown County, a member of Habitat for Humanity and a Life Board member of Helping Hands. 
Mr. Coon was the Director and an ex-officio member of Commerce and the Salvation Army.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia Stevenson Coon of the home; a son, Kevin Coon; a daughter, Allison C. Jones and husband Danny; two grandchildren, Brendan Jones and Spencer Jones, all of Greenville, S.C.

Robert Cribb

Robert Joe Cribb, 61, passed away on Friday, September 14, 2012 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Born on December 7, 1950, in Georgetown, he was a son of the late Joe K. Cribb and the late Rena Lambert Cribb. Mr. Cribb was of the Holiness faith and enjoyed working on lawn mowers.
Survivors include one son, Robert “Bob” Cribb of Albemarle, N.C.; three brothers, John P. “J.P.” Cribb (Linda), Ralph E. Cribb and Lloyd C. Cribb, all of Georgetown; four sisters, JoAnn Caulder (Joseph), Dooney Barwick, Annie Martin and Lorene Jerandes (Elmer), all of Georgetown; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. on Monday, September 17, 2012 in the Antioch Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Todd.

Michael Elliott

Michael Elliott, 55, beloved husband of Barbara Jean Elliott of Georgetown, S.C., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, September 16, 2012, at MUSC Hospital.
Mr. Elliott was born a son of Doddie “DW” Wasdon Elliott and Pauline Howard Elliott on January 16, 1957 in Georgetown. 
He was a 35-year employee with Kroger Grocery Store. 
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the Sand Hill Hunting Club. 
He leaves behind his wife; two children, Kathleen “Katie” Marie Elliott and Julie Ann Elliott: five brothers, Paul “Tykie” (Libby) Howard, Doddie Wayne Elliott, J. Alvin (Jennie Lee) Elliott, Glen E. (Kathy) Elliott, Melvin A. “Dooley” (Teresa) Elliott; and three sisters, Marilyn F.(Paul) Roy, Patricia A. (Michael) Moorefield, and Teressa L. (Joe) Smith.
He was predeceased by his parents.
A Home Going Celebration will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at the Sampit United Methodist Church. 
Interment will follow in the church cemetery, directed by the Georgetown Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening, September 18, 2012, at the Andrews Chapel.

Eddie Leigh

Eddie E. Leigh, 93, widower of Margaret S. Leigh, passed away Saturday, September 15, 2012 at Tidelands Community Hospice House.
Born on October 25, 1918, in Horry County, he was a son of the late Willie Leigh and the late Dosha Joyner Leigh.
Mr. Leigh was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Conway where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class and a former deacon.
He was World War II U.S. Army veteran and was retired from AVX Corporation.
Mr. Leigh enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Survivors include one son, Gene Leigh (Judy) of Georgetown; two daughters, Pat Gibson (Fritz) of Myrtle Beach and Janice Jordan (Bryan) of Conway; 11 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, September 17, 2012 in the Hillcrest Cemetery Mausoleum with the Rev. Dudley Parnell officiating.

James Mincey

James Daron Mincey, 61, beloved husband of Demetra Prosser Mincey of Andrews, S.C., went home to be with the Lord, Monday, September 17, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Mincey was born a son of Horace B. Mincey and Verla Cooper Mincey on August 10, 1951 in Hemingway.
He was a retired maintenance technician at Arcelor Mittal Steel Corporation. 
He leaves behind his wife; three children, Contessa M. Wall, James “Clay” Mincey, and Brandon Lee Mincey; two grandchildren, Logan Mincey and Mary Peyton Wall; two brothers, Horace “HB” (Pat) Mincey Jr. and Michael S. (Jenny) Mincey; and three sisters, Linda M. (Joe) Young, Brenda M. Bessinger, and Ann M. (Bill) Burris.
A Home Going Celebration will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at The Family Worship Center, directed by the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.
The Mincey family will receive family and friends following the service from 7 to 9 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

Devonia Moore

Devonia Thomas Moore, 86, of Andrews, S.C., the widow of Thomas Robert “TR” Moore, went home to be with the Lord Friday morning, September 14, 2012 at her residence.
Mrs. Moore was born the daughter of Daniel Jackson Thomas and Melissa Elliott Thomas on November 2, 1925 in Andrews. 
Though words could never fully describe all her life, she committed her life to acts of selfless giving, fervent prayer, and an unconditional love to earn her the distinguished title – Beloved Mother.
Devonia and TR were married April 23,1943and celebrated 57 years together. 
Their home was blessed with two children, Linda M. (Art) Wolf, and Marilyn (Theron) Floyd; three grandchildren, Robert (Heather) Wolf, Jeff (Johnnie) Floyd, and Susan Floyd; five great-grandchildren, Caleb, J.T., Ethan, Emma, and Evie. 
Also surviving are her adopted family including Rev. Elwood (Liz) Duncan, Dorothy “Dot” Merritt, Lorraine (Theron, Sr.) Floyd, Rev. Donald (Virginia) Duncan, Burnett (Bertha) Duncan, Mrs. Betty Duncan and Rebecca “Bec” Duncan; and a large number of nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; a husband; a brother, Reid Irby Saxon; a sister, Viola Thomas McKenzie; and her adopted brothers including, Rev. Henry and Mildred Duncan, Earl Duncan and DD Duncan.
A graveside service was held at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening, September 16, 2012 at Oak Ridge Cemetery, directed by the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.
Visitation was from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, September 16, 2012, at the Andrews Chapel.

Anna Taylor

Funeral services for the late Anna B. Taylor will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at St. Paul UM Church in Nesmith, S.C.
Interment will follow in the St. Paul Cemetery in Nesmith, directed by Nesmith~Pinckney Funeral Home, Inc.
Late Saturday night, September 15, 2012, the Lord looked down and saw his beloved child and decided to bring her home.
Anna B. Taylor was born on July 24, 1924, to the late Aaron and Ethel Cooper.
She attended public school in Williamsburg County.
At an early age she confessed Christ and became an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church of Morrisville, S.C.
Ms. Taylor served in many capacities in the church until her health failed.
Additionally, she was a dedicated member of the Eastern Star Chapter 300. Anna B. also had many jobs along the way which included nursing, employment with Wellman Industries, and Wellman Country Club.
Mrs. Taylor was married to the late Harold Taylor.
This union was blessed to raise four children.
Three brothers and four sisters proceeded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Jane A. Cooper of the home; one son, Cleo (Nell) Cooper of Hemingway, S.C.; one nephew, Brian Cooper of Charlotte, N.C.; one niece, Shawneequa Hayward of Hemingway, S.C.; two sisters, Ella Mae Gibson of Morrisville, S.C. and Magdelena G. Cooper of Jersey City, N.J.; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Among them are one special niece and caregiver, Deborah Anderson; and special nephew, Roosevelt Anderson, both of Hemingway, S.C.
