SAMUEL THOMAS, SR. - KINGSTREE Funeral services for Samuel Thomas, Sr. were held Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home Chapel in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at White Oak Cemetery in Lake City. Mr. Thomas, 59, died Saturday, October 19, 2008 at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital in Columbia. He was born in Williamsburg County on August 7, 1949, a son of Isiah and Mary Thomas. He was a graduate of Cades High School. He was employed by Black River Hardwood for over 20 years. Survivors, in addition to his parents of Kingstree, are: three sons, David Thomas, Samuel Thomas and Gregory Kennedy, all of Lake City; one daughter, Mrs. Teresa Cox (Everett) of Hampton, Virginia; one brother, Isiah Thomas (Gertrude) of Myrtle Beach; six sisters, Hattie Myers of Rochester, New York; Mrs. Sarah Frierson (Jack), Annie Thomas, Mrs. Patricia Kinder (Ernest), Shirley Thom-as and Jacqueline Thomas, all of Kingstree; and two grandchildren.
GERALD SMITH - KINGSTREE A celebration of the life of Gerald C. “Jerry” Smith was held Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington. Born May 28, 1949 in Darlington, Jerry was the son of the late Frances Stokes Smith and the late Leon Kendall Smith, Sr. of Kingstree. He fought in Vietnam as a captain in the Marines and worked as a U.S. Postal Carrier for 29 years. Survivors are: his wife, Mary Jo McElveen Smith; one daughter, Leslie Smith McKenzie of Columbia; two brothers, Samuel Smith (Laurie Searle) of Atlanta, Georgia; and Kendall Smith (Gwen) of Milan, Tennessee; and five grandchildren. HUSTUST MORRIS - TRIO Funeral services for Brother Hustust Morris, conducted by the Rev. Alice M. Parson, were held Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Greater St. John AME Church in Trio. Burial, directed by Henry-hand Funeral Home, followed at St. John AME Churchyard Cemetery. Brother Morris died Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. He was born January 30, 1945 in Charleston, a son of the late Josephine Morris. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County and did a two-year tour in Job Corps in the Northern California area. He was a member of Greater St. John AME Church, where he sang on the male chorus. Survivors are: one uncle, the Rev. Nathan Morris (Jeanett) of Trio; and one step-brother, Samuel Gallishaw (Mildred) of Trio.
ELIZABETH STONE - JOHNSONVILLE Elizabeth Blondell Stone, 91, the widow of James Hilburn Stone, died Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at the Lake City-Scranton Health Care Center. Funeral services were held Friday, October 24, 2008, at the New Hope Free Will Baptist Church of the Pentecostal Faith. Burial, directed by the Hemingway Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home, followed at the church cemetery. Mrs. Stone was born August 3, 1917, in Johnsonville, the daughter of Willie B. Dennis and Minnie Eaddy Dennis. She was a life-long member of the New Hope Free Will Baptist Church of the Pentecostal Faith, where she served in many capacities including Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible School worker, and Ladies Auxiliary. She was predeceased by a daughter, Louann Stone. Survivors are: two sons, Charles W. Stone (Brenda) of Murrells Inlet; and Kenneth H. Stone of Pamplico; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Memorials may be made to the Johnsonville Rescue Squad.
HAZEL HENSON - KINGSTREE Hazel Rogan “Judy” Henson, 73, widow of Philip A. Henson, Sr., died Thursday, October 23, 2008 in a Florence hospital. Graveside funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Grover Mixon and the Rev. David Marcy, were held Saturday, October 25, 2008 at New Market Cemetery near Greeleyville. Mrs. Henson was born July 17, 1935 in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Thomas S. Rogan, Sr. and Edelyn Montgomery Rogan. She was a graduate of Flora McDonald College with a bachelor’s degree in education and had taught in the Williamsburg County school system for over 30 years. She was a former member of Greeleyville Baptist Church and was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church. Surviving are her children, Sara H. Hatch (Randy) of Kingstree; and Philip A. “Andy” Henson, Jr., (Janice) of Bennettsville; one sister, Florence Little (Warren) of Jonesville; one brother, William Rogan (Jackie) of Greeleyville; and three grandchildren. ERNEST HADDOCK, JR. - KINGSTREE Ernest Henry Haddock, Jr., 72, died Saturday, October 25, 2008 in a Florence hospital. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Bob Crawford, were held Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Williams-burg Funeral Home, followed at the church cemetery. Mr. Haddock was born June 24, 1936 in Starkville, Mississippi, a son of the late Lula Ashmore Haddock and Ernest H. Haddock, Sr. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School class of 1954 and Clemson University, class of 1958. He served his country as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and afterwards taught civil engineering at Mississippi State University before moving back to Kingstree to become a registered land surveyor. Mr. Haddock was a member of Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Survivors are: his wife, Thelma Mitchum Haddock of Kingstree; two step-sons, Brice Benton (Michelle) and Glenn Benton (Patricia) of Kingstree; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. BLAKE SHEPARD - SUMMERVILLE Funeral services for Blake Avery Dakota Shepard were held Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Cane Bay High School Auditorium in Summerville. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Sheep Island Cemetery. Mr. Shepard died Thursday, October 16, 2008. He was born July 11, 1989 in Bronx, New York. He was the son of the late Penelope Yvette Shepard and Nathaniel Crandle. He resided in South Carolina with his grandparents Geraldine Webb and the late James Webb. He received his education in Charleston and Summerville and graduated from Stratford High School. He then was employed by South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department where he performed several job tasks. He did landscaping, carpentry and assembliment. He also wanted to attend Trident Technical College to further his education. Survivors, in addition to his grandmother of the home, are: his brothers and sisters, Rakeem Crandle of Tennessee; Jeffrey Shepard, Kareem Crandle, Michael Crandle, Ira Shepard, Nathania Green, Eboni Webb, Tashawn Crandle and Linda Crandle, all of Bronx, New York; and Nathaniel Crandle of Florida; and two nephews, Jeffrey Smith and Daquan Shepard and a cousin, Davaun Webb, who were like brothers to him.
THOMAS BRADLEY - SALTERS Funeral services for Thomas “Tommie” Bradley, conducted by the Rev. Carl Shaw, were held Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Clauddie Henryhand Mem-orial Chapel in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Crossroad Cemetery. Mr. Bradley died Monday, October 20, 2008 at his residence in Salters. He grew up in the Salters Community and was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He farmed and was employed at a chemical plant in Kingstree. Later he was employed by Williamsburg County as a machine operator and remained there until his retirement. He was married to the late Julia Scott Rush. Survivors are: two daughters, Sarah Cochran Woods (Chappelle) of Salters; and Thomasina Bradley Black of the home; three step-children, Diane Whitfield (Ulysses) of Salters; and Bernard Rush and Ronnie Rush of Columbia; one brother, James “Monkey” Bradley; 11 children, one reared as his own, Thomas Black of the home; and 15 great-grandchildren.
TOM TENNANT - KINGSTREE Tom Tennant of Kingstree, formerly of Hanahan, husband of Patty Floyd Tennant, died Friday, October 24, 2008. A celebration of life service was held in Kingstree at a later date. Mr. Tennant, 62, was born January 29, 1946 in Butte, Montana, a son of Walt and Jean Ferguson Tennant. He was a retired warehouse manager with New Orleans Cold Storage (NOCS). Survivors are: his wife Patty of Charleston and Kingstree; one step-daughter, Jessica Hooper of Mt. Pleasant; one brother, Larry of Washington State; and two sisters, Millie and Frances, both of Washington State. Memorials may be made to Pet Helpers, 1447 Folly Road, Charleston, SC 29412.
JACOB TISDALE, JR. - KINGSTREE Funeral services for Jacob Tisdale, Jr., conducted by the Rev. Alonso Middleton, were held Thursday, October 23, 2008 at Greater Bethel AME Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery. Mr. Tisdale, 55, died Friday, October 17, 2008 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He was born Sept-ember 23, 1953 in Kingstree, the son of Stina Cooper Tisdale and the late Jacob Tisdale, Sr. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County and graduated in 1971 from Williamsburg Technical College. In 1975 he received a bachelor of arts degree in social studies from Allen University in Columbia. After receiving his degree, he worked at the Kirkland Department of Corr-ection from 1975 to 1980. He served for six years in the United States Navy and received an honorable discharge. He continued to work at various jobs in his area of expertise in the upper states for the next several years. He returned to South Carolina and worked at the Clarendon County Disabilities and Special Needs Board and the Lutheran Family Services in Hartsville. At the time of his death, he was employed as the Resident Director for the Williamsburg County Disabilities and Special Needs Board. He was also a Notary Public for the State of South Carolina. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Greeleyville, are: his wife, Edna Alston Tisdale of the home; one son, Jacob Devane Tisdale (Crystal) of Charlottesville, Virginia; one daughter, Gina Yvette Tisdale of Daytona Beach, Florida; one adopted son, Franklin Thomas (Judy) of Columbia; four stepchildren, Shawn Alston (Judy) of Lumberton, North Carolina; Jonathan Alston (Jessica) of Jacksonville, Florida; Raven McFadden and Markita McFadden, both of the home; one brother, Carlisle Tisdale of Greeleyville; two sisters, Jacoshia Edmond (Char-lie) of Orlando, Florida; and Cassandra “Baby Sis” Fleming (Marvin) of Columbia; his mother-in-law, Mary Alston of Kingstree; one grandchild; and two step-grandchildren.
