Webber Rowell Sr.
LTC Maxcy Webber Rowell Sr., U.S. Army Retired, 84, husband of Iris Jean Blackmon Rowell of Andrews, S.C. for 62 years, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 18, 2012.
Mr. Rowell was born September 4, 1928 in Kingstree to the late John Horace Rowell and Essie Mae Jones Rowell.
He retired as the principal of Andrews High School and served as the football and basketball coach for 11 years.
The football field is named the “Webber Rowell Stadium” in his honor.
He served on the S.C. State High School Athletic League and was an Eagle Scout in the 329 Club Masters.
Mr. Rowell was an alumnus of Wofford College and the Citadel Graduate School.
He served as an assistant fire chief and owned a service station for many years.
He was a member served on the church board of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Mr. Rowell’s military career lasted over 25 years and included time and company commander and battalion commander.
In retirement, he worked with his son at Andrews Nursery.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons and their wives, Rev. Maxcy and Brenda Rowell Jr., and Jim and Sara Rowell; a daughter, Karen “Cookie” Spillane and husband Mickey; a brother, Spivey Rowell; a sister-in-law, Lila Rowell; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at Trinity United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Maxcy Rowell Jr. and Dr. Ben Gafford.
Burial, with full military honors, will be in the Andrews Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church for two hours prior to the service.
