Evalene Newton Altman, 78, of Andrews, the wife of Presley L. Altman went home to be with the Lord on Monday morning, June 1, 2009.

Funeral services will be 2 PM, Thursday, June 4 2009, at the Andrews Church of God. Interment will follow in the Andrews Memorial Cemetery directed by the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.

Visitation will be 7-9 PM, Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at the church sanctuary.

Mrs. Altman, a daughter of Lonnie Legrand Newton and Isolene Ward Newton, was born April 26, 1931, in Andrews. She was a line service operator with Oneita Mills and a member of the Spring Pond Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Evalene and Presley were married on March 29,1954, and celebrated 55 years together. From their blessed union survives two sons, Presley Winston (Susan) Altman of Georgetown, and Steven Douglas (Stephanie) Altman of Andrews; five grandchildren, Nicholas Altman and MaKinley Altman, Melissa Driggers, Kerri Altman, and Dana Altman.

Also surviving are: five brothers, Yoakam (Vera) Newton, Donald (Deborah) Newton, Jerry (Betty) Newton, all of Andrews; Dale (Glenda) Newton of Turbeville and Rev. Ronnie (Shirley) Newton of Hemingway; four sisters, Betty Mae (John) Baylor, Ruthlee (Harry) Howard, Diane (Jamie) McCants, and Rose Carter, all of Andrews.

She was predeceased by his parents and a daughter, Vernie Grace Altman.

Presley L. Altman

Presley Leonidas Altman, 81, of Andrews, the husband of Evalene Newton Altman, went to be with the Lord on Monday afternoon, June 1, 2009, at MUSC in Charleston.

Funeral services will be 2 PM, Thursday, June 4 2009, at the Andrews Church of God. Interment will follow in the Andrews Memorial Cemetery directed by the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.

Visitation will be 7-9 PM, Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at the church.

Mr. Altman, a son of William James Altman and Virginia Winston Altman, was born March 31, 1928, in Lake City. He was a retired salesman with Weston Auto, and a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.

Kelso L. Cantley

Kelso Lowell Cantley, 83, of Surfside Beach, died Monday, June 1, 2009, at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet.

Mr. Cantley was born in Williamsburg Co. on October 29, 1925, a son of the late Francis Calhoun Cantley and Mable "Bell" Walters Cantley. He grew up in Williamsburg Co. and worked at the Naval Shipyard in Charleston during World War II. After his marriage to the late Iva Nell Ard Cantley, he moved to Georgetown, where he was employed with International Paper Co. for forty years until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Cantley was a member of Winyah Lodge #40, Ancient Freemasons in Georgetown and the Scottish Rite Temple and Omar Shrine Temple in Mt. Pleasant.

Surviving are: three sons, L. Wayne Cantley of Andrews, Keith E. (Tina Sanderson) Cantley, and Jacob D. Cantley, both of Surfside Beach; a sister, Hazelene "Peachy" Morris of Andrews; two grandchildren, Amy Cantley and Shane Cantley; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services with Masonic Rites will be eleven o'clock Thursday morning, June 4, 2009, at the Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Andrews Memorial Cemetery.

Clarence A. Greene Sr.

Clarence A. Greene Sr., 73 of Georgetown died on Friday, May 29th at his residence. Funeral services for Mr. Greene will be held 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Bethel AME Church.

Mr. Greene was born August 20, 1935 in Georgetown, SC to Mrs. Bessie Green Greene and Mr. Mitchel A. Greene. He attended Georgetown County Public Schools and was a retired US Army Master Sgt. He was also a member of Bethel AME Church.

Mr. Greene is survived by his wife, Cleo Greene of Georgetown, SC; his children: Vanessa Greene of Glen Cove, NY and Clarence Alvin Greene, Jr. of Georgetown, SC; His brother: George Brown Greene of Andrews, SC; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

J.F. Noris Stone

J.F. Noris Stone, age 82, of Pawleys Island, died Monday, June 1, 2009 at his residence.

J.F. Noris Stone was born in Holyoke, MA on September 12, 1926. He was the son of Noris J. Stone and Edwina Favreau. He was raised in the area of New Canaan, Connecticut. He went to school in the "Little Red School House" on Carter Street in New Canaan from the first to fifth grades. He then graduated from New Canaan High School.

Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served in the Philippines and China during World War II. He was called back to service for the Korean War but stayed in the States until he was discharged. On May 22, 1948, he married Elizabeth Cerretani and settled in Vista, NY. He worked in the family business, Noris J. Stone & Sons as a water systems contractor. He became president of the company from 1960 to 1985 until his retirement.

Upon retirement he and his wife Elizabeth moved to Pawleys Island, SC. He became the manager in charge of grounds at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church for the next twenty years. He was under the direction of Reverend Charles Snopek and Reverend Patrick Stenson. He is preceded in death by a sister, Joan Stone Apy of Dania, FL.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth and eight children; Noris J. Stone II and three grandchildren; Lorraine Stone Brown and her husband Ronald and two grandchildren; David LaRoche and his wife Constance and three grandchildren; Suzanne Stone Hill and three grandchildren; Karen Stone Capalbo and her husband Frank and three grandchildren; Michael Stone and his wife Tami and three grandchildren; Dennis Stone and his wife Lynn and three grandchildren; Michele Stone Schneider and her husband Chet and two grandchildren. He is also survived by ten great-grandchildren; and a brother, Roger J. Stone and his wife Gloria of Vista, NY.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at the church columbarium.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 P.M. Friday, June 5, 2009 at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church.

Robert C. Tonry

Mr. Robert Campbell Tonry, age 87, of Georgetown, died on Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Morningside Assisted Living, Georgetown, SC.

He was a native of Fairmont, West Virginia, the son of the late Robert C. and Angela Hart Tonry. Mr. Tonry was a veteran of the US Air Force, had been the proprietor of the long time family business, Wiedebusch Plumbing & Heating, Fairmont, WV and a Rotarian for many years.

Mr. Tonry is survived by his wife Carol C. Tonry, two daughters, Caroline Youngblood, Charlotte, NC and Cynthia (Joe) McKain, Beaufort, SC, five grandchildren, Andrew McKain, Aaron McKain, Brennon Youngblood, Allison McKain, and Courtney Youngblood.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, June 3, 3009, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Graham Funeral Home, 2200 S. Fraser Street, Georgetown, SC. The family will greet friends at the funeral home following the service.
