Linsey Barcus

Linsey Barcus, 62, of Newark, N.J., died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008 at a New Jersey hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Nesmith-Pinckney Funeral Home of Hemingway.

Faye T. Curtis

Faye T. Curtis, 70, of Hemingway, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 in Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008 in Hemingway First United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, was in the Indiantown Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Curtis was born in Hemingway, a daughter of the late Marion Lester and Bonnie Cook Thompson. She was a receptionist for Amedisys of Georgetown, a member of the Hemingway First United Methodist Church, Margaret Huggins Circle and was on various committee in the church, and was a graduate of Hemingway High School.

Survivors are: her husband, Tyson A. "Sonny Curtis Jr. of the home; sons, Tyson A. Curtis III (Caroline) of Mt. Pleasant and Marion "Woody" Curtis (Marie) of Hemingway; sister, Beckie Buxton (George) of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Emily Curtis, Tyson A. Curtis IV, Paul Mason, Woody Pre'ot Curtis and Pierce Curtis.

Ronnie L. Gantt Sr.

Ronnie Lealand Gantt Sr., 77, of Murrells Inlet died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 at Waccamaw Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008 in Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church, with burial following at 1 p.m. in Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The men of the Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church Choir will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Lealand and Laura Gantt. Mr. Gantt was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and he retired from the South Carolina National Guard. He was a member of Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church serving as an elder and was an avid choir member. He was also a member of Dutch Fork Masonic Lodge in Columbia.

Surviving are: his wife, Joanne; one son, Ronnie L. Gantt Jr. of Chapin; and two daughters, Mary Ellen Arell of Overland Park, Kan. and Miriam Gantt Coffman of Central; and four grandchildren, Drew Gantt, Cie Arell, Chelcee Coffman, and Chandler Coffman.

Memorials may be made to the Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church Organ Fund.

Peter E. Grannis

Peter Edwards Grannis, 89, of Burlington, Vermont, died Sept. 29, 2008 in Vermont.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008 at Corvin-Palmer Funeral Home in Burlington.

A local funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008 at Prince George, Winyah, Episcopal Church in Georgetown. Interment will follow in the Prince George, Winyah, cemetery.

Mr. Grannis was born Feb. 9, 1919 in New York City. He grew up and attended schools in Greenwich, Conn. and attended Amherst College and M.I.T. He traveled around the world two times as a purser's clerk on the President Harrison, an American President Line ship.

He worked at the ship-building facility in Wilmington, N.C., until he joined the U.S. Navy in World War II. After the war, he went to work with the Hartford Machine Screw Company, until he retired after 39 years.

In 1987 he and his wife retired to Georgetown. He was involved in many community activities, helping to start Service Over Self (SOS), an organization for teenagers, was treasurer for the Georgetown Art Gallery and the Navy Club, helped to videotape historic plantations in Georgetown County, and was a member of the Winyah Indigo Society. He was active in the Episcopal Church, serving as a junior warden and senior warden in Connecticut.

He was predeceased by his wife, Caroline Kinloch Bull Grannis.

Survivors include: his children, Yissacher Granitsky of Netivot, Israel, Anne Grannis of Moss Beach, Calif., Timothy Appleton Grannis of South Burlington, Vt. and Stephen Grannis of Pembroke, Maine; 20 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Prince George Episcopal Church Preservation Account.

Callie D. Hinshaw

Callie D. Hinshaw, 84, of Murrells Inlet, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008 at Waccamaw Community Hospital.

Memorial services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 in The Little Chapel at Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church.

She was the daughter of the late Walter and Carrie Doster. Mrs. Hinshaw was born in Monroe, N.C., and lived in Charlotte, N.C. before moving to Murrells Inlet in 1986.

Mrs. Hinshaw was a member of Murrells Inlet Presbyterian Church and belonged to the afternoon circle.

She worked many years as a secretary/bookkeeper. Mrs. Hinshaw worked at Huntington Beach State Park as a parking fee attendant until she retired. Mrs. Hinshaw was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Robert Hinshaw; three brothers; and one sister.

Surviving are: her daughter, Debbie Hinshaw of Murrells Inlet; two grandchildren, Tara Nutter of Louisville, Ky. and Cole Sisk of Lexington, Ky.; two great-grandchildren, Kallie Nutter and Bryson Sisk; and her niece, Quinn Hancock of Mt. Holly, N.C.

Marjorie A. Holliday

Marjorie Ambrose Holliday, 87, of Georgetown, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, at Tidelands Community Hospice House.

Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008 in Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. G. Edward Usher. Burial followed in Elmwood Cemetery Annex.

Mrs. Holliday was born in Georgetown March 24, 1921, a daughter of the late Luther Rutherford Ambrose and Minnie Plexico Ambrose. She graduated as valedictorian from Winyah High School and also was a graduate of Winthrop College. Mrs. Holliday was a former postmaster of Plantersville Post Office and taught school in Columbia and Andrews. She was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, the Francis Asbury Sunday School Class, the Discipleship Bible Study, and a member and former president of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Holliday was a founder of the Prison Ministry Inmate Fellowship and was a former board member of Florence United Methodist Home.

Mrs. Holliday was a member of the Daughter of the American Revolution, Winyah Chapter and the Georgetown Garden Club. She was a former member of the Board of Visitors of Winthrop College. Mrs. Holliday participated in the planning of the 250th Anniversary of Georgetown Celebration.

Mrs. Holliday was predeceased by a daughter, Marjorie Abigail Holliday and two brothers, J. Rudolph Ambrose and Luther Rutherford Ambrose.

Surviving are: her husband, Lawrence "Larry" E. Holliday of Pawleys Island; three sons, Lawrence E. Holliday Jr. (Robin) and W. Ambrose Holliday (Julie), all of Pawleys Island, and Dr. Joseph W. Holliday (Janice) of Greenville; a daughter, Margaret H. Carter (Kirk) of Greenville; eight grandchildren, Erin Holliday, Walker Holliday, Sally Holliday, Hayes Holliday, John Lawrence Holliday, Abbie Holliday, Lucy Carter and Maggie Carter.

Gladys M. Levesque

Gladys Maimie Levesque, 84, of Murrells Inlet, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2008 at her home.

Grand Strand Funeral Home is serving the family.

Born in Jamaica, N.Y., Mrs. Levesque was a long-time resident of New Jersey before moving to South Carolina 22 years ago.

Survivors include: three daughters, Wendy Levesque of Murrells Inlet, Janet De Buizer (Jim) of Nokomis, Fla., and Lorraine See (Dan) of Sherman, Pa.; and one son, Michael Levesque (Donna) of Pawleys Island; nine grandchildren, Justin Randle, Kaylie Cabanaw, Jill Ford, Jimmy De Buizer, Danny See, David See, Donnie Meade, Janelle Giardino, and Cary Levesque; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials can be made to hospice, or to a charity of one's choice.

Allen W. Palmer

Allen Wayne Palmer, 35, of Hemingway, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008 at his home in Hemingway.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 at Hopewell AME Church in Hemingway, with the Rev. Dr. Kylon Middleton, pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the Hopewell Cemetery, under the direction of Nesmith-Pinckney Funeral Home of Hemingway.

Mr. Palmer was born Nov. 18, 1972, a son of Willie Mae Palmer and the late Dudley Palmer. He was educated in the public schools of Georgetown County. He was employed at Wal-Mart of Myrtle Beach.

Survivors include: his mother of Hemingway; seven brothers, Eli Williams (Gladys), George Palmer, Jonathan Williams of Hemingway, Willie Palmer (Regina) of New Jersey, Dudley Palmer Jr. of New York, Edward Palmer of Delaware; 13 sisters, Donna Williams, Rosa Rice, Audrey Burroughs, Pamela Armstrong (Neil), Christine Hamnah, all of Hemingway, Rebecca Holmes (Earnest) of Lithonia, Ga., Shirley Palmer, Margaret Fulmore (Edward), both of Andrews, Debra Palmer, Patricia Palmer, Sarah Murphy, all of Delaware, Clara Vereen of Georgetown, and Netta Atkins of Newark, N.J.

Gerada L. Reid

Gerada L. Reid, 54, of Georgetown, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, in Wilds Funeral Home, Courtyard Chapel.

Mr. Reid was born Aug. 25, 1954 in Georgetown, a son of the late Maxie Reid and Mrs. Wilhelmenia Roberts Reid. He attended Howard High School and Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church. He was a cook at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include: his mother of Georgetown; three brothers, Anthony Reid of Montgomery, Ala., Kavin Todd Reid of Stanford, Va., and Robert Ted Reid of Georgetown; six sisters, Linda Keith, Novette Smith, Gwen Gunther and Sharon Brown, all of Georgetown, Zelma McDonald of Fayetteville, N.C. and Kathy Brooks of West Palm Beach, Fla.

James W. Roberts Jr.

James Walter Roberts Jr., 65, of Jacksonville, N.C., died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2008 in Johnson Funeral Home in Jacksonville, N.C., by the Rev. Jerry Marshburn. Burial will follow in the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville, N.C., with military honors.

Mr. Roberts was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Vietnam, and was a member of the Moose Lodge.

Surviving are: his wife, Mrs. Barbara Roberts of Jacksonville, N.C.; mother, Allie Sellers Hardwick (Pete) of Conway; sons, Jim Azar of Las Vegas and Jamie Charles Roberts of Garner, N.C.; daughters, Deborah Patterson of Holcomb, Kan., Lisa Marie Roberts Long of Apex, N.C., Kimberly Lee Roberts Lomas of Naples, Fla., and Kimberly Dawn Glaesner of Jacksonville, N.C.; brothers, Thelbert Roberts of Hinesville, Ga., Clifton Hucks of Conway, and Olin Hucks of Georgetown; sister, Helen Roberts Montgomery of Conway; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Doris Kemp Jones of Jacksonville, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Walter Roberts Jr.

Sandra W. Vey

Sandra June Webber Vey, 59, of Georgetown, wife of F.W. "Pete" Vey, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 in Tidelands Community Hospice House.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2008 in the Graham Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Aldon Johnson. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Vey was born Feb. 1, 1949 in Portsmouth, Va., a daughter of the late William Semino Webber and the late Minzette Koonce Webber.

Mrs. Vey was a retired employee with J. C. Penny Co., and was currently employed with Eckerd Drugs and Rite Aid with 29 years of service.

Surviving are: her husband; four children, Crystal Fay Furbee of Georgetown, Lorrie A. Campbell of Moncks Corner, James L. Murphy of Reevesville and William R. Murphy of Ladson; one sister, Betty Jean Goins of Georgetown; five brothers, William D. Webber of Moncks Corner, Robert W. Webber of Jacksonville, Fla., Joe C. Webber of North Charleston, Kenneth G. Webber of Peoria, Arizona, and Tracy A. Webber of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.
