Cornell Brockington

Cornell Brockington of Hemingway died Friday, July 18, 2008 from injuries received at an automobile accident.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2008 at Nesmith-Pinckney Chapel in Hemingway. Officiating will be the Rev. Bernice Brockington. Interment will follow in Hopewell Cemetery, under the direction of Nesmith-Pinckney Funeral Home.

Mr. Brockington was born in Georgetown County, a son of Mrs. Belinda Sumpter and the late William Sumpter. He was educated in the public schools of Georgetown County, and was employed at Landmark Resort Hotel.

Survivors include: six children, Shawn Washington, Destiny Carnette, Jean Davis, Carnell Brockington Jr., Deiondre Lewis, Jahlea Jalnette Alexandrette and Enoy Edna Alexandrette of Hemingway; his mother of Hemingway; one sister, Tammie Sumpter of Hemingway; and one brother, John Sumpter of Hemingway.

Hazel M. Bryson

Hazel Mercer Bryson, 88, of Georgetown, died Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2008, at the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ted A. Sherrill. Burial will follow in Andrews Memorial Cemetery. Sign a guestbook at www.mayerfuneralhome.com.

Mrs. Bryson was born in Andrews on Feb. 16, 1920, a daughter of the late William Danie Mercer and Ida Virginia Munn Mercer. She grew up in Andrews, graduated from Andrews High School, and attended business school in Florence. Mrs. Bryson worked at the Charleston Navy Yard for a time prior to moving to Rome, Ga. She was a civil service worker and retired from the Social Security Administration. Mrs. Bryson moved to Georgetown about ten years ago. She was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Rome and the widow of James Bryson.

Survivors include: a step-son, Bill Bryson of Athens, Ga.; a step-daughter, Betty Frazier of Rome, Ga.; two brothers, Guy W. "Billy" Mercer of Hemingway and W. Dan Mercer of Georgetown; a sister, Lila M. Quickel of Georgetown; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Joe N. Davis

Joe Nathan Davis, 74, of Andrews, died on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008 at Canaan AME Church in the Earles Community with Rev. Mervin McBride officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery under the direction of McKnight-Fraser Funeral Home.

Mr. Davis, a son of the late George and Edna Davis, was born March 12, 1934 in Williamsburg County.

Surviving are: his wife, Bessie Davis of Andrews; four sons, Andrew Harper and Ernest Harper of Bronx, N.Y., Calvin Harper of Atlanta, Ga. and Joe Davis of Bronx; two daughters, Mary Glover of Mt. Pocono, Penn. and Edna Davis-Matthew of Bronx; a surrogate daughter, Joann Black of Kingstree; two brothers, Julius Davis and Willie James Davis of Bronx; two sisters, Lucille Lewis of Hemingway and Betty Jean Tisdale of Miami, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Frazier Dozier

Frazier Dozier, 82, of Johnsonville, died Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Lake City Nursing Facility in Scranton.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Nesmith-Pinckney Funeral Home of Hemingway. The family is receiving friends at the residence.

John Howard

John Howard, 81, of Pawleys Island, a retired cook/caterer, died Tuesday, July 22, 2008 in Newark, N.J.

Funeral service plans are incomplete and will be announced later by Wilds Funeral Home of Georgetown.

Katherine Johnson

Katherine Bellamy Johnson, 90, of Myrtle Beach, died Sunday, July 20, 2008 at Myrtle Beach Estates.

Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2008 in First United Methodist Church of Myrtle Beach with the Rev. Ken Timmerman and the Rev. Scarlet Tanner-Hester officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service Sunday, from 1:45 until 3 p.m., in the church's parlor.

William A. Lofton

William Andrew "Drew" Lofton, 54, of Myrtle Beach, died Monday, July 21, 2008.

Funeral services will be at 12 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Myrtle Beach. Officiating will be Bishop Jerry Edwards. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. in McClellanville United Methodist Cemetery in McClellanville with the Rev. John W. Murray III officiating.

Mr. Lofton was born in McClellanville on Feb. 12, 1954, a son of the late Henry Michael Lofton and Pearl Golden Lofton. He was a graduate of Winyah Academy and attended the College of Charleston. Mr. Lofton worked for Andrews Bank and Trust Co., R.M. Moore Co., and was currently the owner and manager of Victoria Dianne's Day Spa. He was a former board member of the Georgetown Mental Health Association and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he served his church in a number of capacities.

Surviving are: his wife, Vickie Lofton of Myrtle Beach; a brother, H. Michael Lofton Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; and a sister, Sara Ann Murray of Charleston.

Memorials may be made to a Humane Society.

Janie M. Morris

Janie Margaret Morris, 61, of Andrews, died Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008, in the First Baptist Church of Andrews. Officiating will be the Rev. Donald Paul Sapp. Burial will follow in Andrews Memorial Cemetery. Sign a guestbook at www.mayerfuneralhome.com.

Ms. Morris was born in Andrews on March 15, 1947, a daughter of the late William George Morris and Margaret Emma Foster Morris. She graduated from Andrews High School Class of 1965 and a business college in Chattanooga, Tenn. Ms. Morris was employed as a payroll secretary for several textile manufacturing companies. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Andrews.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mary Alice Morris Langston (Donald) of Andrews; a sister, Ms. Emma Morris Gibbons of Myrtle Beach; a brother, William G. "Billy" Morris (Diane) of Florence; five grandchildren, Cassie Langston, Kirby Langston, Dustin Langston, Storm Langston, and Shaine Langston, all of Andrews; three nieces, Tina Morris Boyette of Annandale, Va., Tes Morris Boyette of Charleston, and Miss Kristen Gibbons of Myrtle Beach; and a nephew, Kyle Gibbons of Myrtle Beach.

Clarence Stafford

Clarence Stafford, 66, of Georgetown, died Monday, July 21, 2008 at Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2008 at W.J. McKnight and Son Chapel in Andrews, with the Rev. Wallace J. McKnight officiating. Burial will follow in the Morning Glory Cemetery under the direction of McKnight-Fraser Funeral Home.

Mr. Stafford, a son of the late Lonon Stafford Jr. and Frances Sanders Stafford, was born Aug. 19, 1942 in Georgetown. He received his education in Georgetown County public schools and served in the U.S. Army.

Surviving are: one brother, Joshua Stafford; one aunt, Edith Keith of Georgetown; a sister, Mattie Perry of Boston, Mass.; three nieces; four nephews; and 16 grandnieces and nephews.
