Lula M. Bartell
Lula Mae Bartell of Kingsburg died Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Williamsburg County Hospital in Kingstree.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at St. Mark AME Church in Kingsburg, with the Rev. Julius Dukes, pastor, officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery in Johnsonville. Nesmith-Pinckney Funeral Home of Hemingway was in charge of arrangements.
Ms. Bartell was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Felix and Maybell Bartell. She was educated in the public schools of Florence County and at Pamplico High School. She was a member of St. Mark AME Church in Kingsburg. She was employed at Lee Dry Cleaners and later Hemingway Apparel.
Survivors include: two daughters, Annie Ruth Flegler (Rickey) and Theresa Lynn Bartell of Columbus, Ga.; one son, Private Antonio Jejuan Bartell of Fort Lee, Va.; two grandchildren, Keyona Brianna Flegler and Jaylin Keyonte' Flegler of Columbus, Ga.; five sisters, Christine Lewis (Esau) of Effingham, Eva Mae Brisco of Florence, Mary Ella Allison (Marion Pete) of Gresham, Martha Ann Eldridge (Jimmy) of Hartford, Conn. and Rosa Lee Bartell of Hemingway; four brothers, Felix Bartell of Philadelphia, Penn., Lee Anderson Bartell (Dorthy) of Effingham, Aaron Bartell (Patsy) of Bridgeport, Conn. and L.J. Bartell of Johnsonville.
Haeng Cumbie
Haeng Mok (Nancy) Cumbie, 76, of Georgetown, wife of Carlton Cumbie Sr., died Thursday, July 31, 2008 at the Tidelands Community Hospice House.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Graham Funeral Home.
Frazier Davis
Frazier Davis of Johnsonville died Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Lake City/Scranton Nursing Home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at White Chapel Freewill Holiness Church in Johnsonville. The Rev. Samuel L. Generette officiated. Interment followed in St. Mark Cemetery, Johnsonville, under the direction of Nesmith-Pinckney Funeral Home of Hemingway.
Mr. Davis was born in Florence County, a son of English Davis and Emma Green Davis. He was educated in the public schools of Florence County. He was employed at McCalls Inc.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, McArthur Generette.
Survivors include: one brother, Luther Davis of Greensboro, N.C.; and one aunt, Mrs. Willie Mae Peterson of Johnsonville.
Elsie George
Elsie George, 80, of Myrtle Beach, died Friday, July 25, 2008 at her home.
Grand Strand Funeral Home & Crematory of Myrtle Beach was is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Mrs. George was born in New Brunswick, N.J., the daughter of the late Michael and Jennie Soos. Mrs. George was a longtime resident of Central New Jersey. Mrs. George recently retired to Myrtle Beach from Monroe Township, N.J. She was formerly employed by N.J. Aluminum Classic Frames and retired in 1989. Elsie was predeceased by her husband, Joseph, in 1995.
Surviving are daughters, Carla George of Myrtle Beach and Judith Battista of Murrells Inlet; granddaughters, Nicole, Brittany and Jessica Battista; great-grandson, Darian Battista; sister, Vilma Lorincz of Garden City; and many nieces and nephews.
Jack E. Heins
Jack Edward Heins, 71, of Surfside Beach died Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008 at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Beach Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, 2008 at the funeral home.

Mr. Heins was born in Wyandotte, Mich., a son of the late Edward Albert and Betty Louise Heins. He was a U.S. Air Force Vietnam veteran, retiring after 22 years of service. He also retired from AVX with 17 years. Mr. Heins attended Garden City Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Natalie Rene Heins.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Barbara, of Surfside Beach; four sons, S. Keith Heins (Lisa) of Chesapeake, Va., Wayne E. Heins (Sharon) of Lugoff, S. Kevin Heins (Pam) of Myrtle Beach, and Warren E. Heins of Surfside Beach; six grandchildren, Marisa, Garrett, Matthew, Julie, Caroline, and Eric Heins; two sisters, Jean Marie Kucia of Wyandotte, Mich., and Sally Lou Oldham of Romlus, Mich.
Doris Howell
Mrs. Doris Howell, 66, of Conway, wife of Mr. Frederick Howell, died Monday, July 28, 2008 at her residence.

Mrs. Howell was born Dec. 22, 1941 in Andrews, a daughter of the late John Pratt Howard and Getty E. Howard.
She was a member of Little Lamb Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving in addition to her husband of Conway are two sons, Dan (Tammy) Howell of Conway and Tim (Cindy) Howell of Nichols; a daughter, Melissa Howell of Conway; two brothers, Jackie Howard of Florence and John Howard of Andrews; two sisters, Joann Blackwell and Nina Pope of Hemingway; eight grandchildren, Arcissia Herndon, Kayla Howell, Caleb Boyd, Nadia Howell, Katya Howell, Isaac Howell, Patrick King and Nicholas King; and one great-grandchild, Hailey King.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Howell was preceded in death by a grandson, Jay Howell; a brother, Elwood Howard; and a sister, Nora Howard.

Margaret B. Lee
Margaret Brown Lee, 72, of Murrells Inlet, died Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Conway Medical Center in Conway.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Greater Gordon Chapel AME Church in Murrells Inlet at 3 p.m., with Rev. Elton Rutledge as the eulogist.
Burial followed in the church cemetery under the direction of McKnight-Fraser Funeral Home. A wake was held Monday, July 28, 2008 at the Walter S. Fraser Memorial Chapel at McKnight-Fraser Funeral Home.
Mrs. Lee, a daughter of the late Rachel Johnson and James Brown, was born Sept. 29, 1935 in Georgetown County. She received her education in the Georgetown County public schools. She was a member of Gordon Chapel AME Church and served in various capacities.
She was also an active member of the Wilgo Society of Murrells Inlet.
Surviving are: six sons, Gilbert R. Lee III and Bradley B. Lee of Harker Heights, Texas, Jerrette Lee of Columbus, Ga., Joseph A. Lee of Murrells Inlet, Stanley L. Lee of Alexandria, Va. and Kevin L. Lee of Ashburn, Va.; two daughters, Jacqueline "Sister" Lee of Murrells Inlet and Inez Lee of Lake Ridge, Va.; six sisters, Mary Holmes of Burgess, Thelma R. Brown of Baltimore, Md., Theresa F. Deas of Ervington, N.J., Matie L. Alston, Joan R. Gary and Isadodra Singleton of Murrells Inlet; four brothers, Abraham Mazyck of Murrells Inlet, Benjamin Mazyck of Washington, D.C., Isaac Mazyck of Woodbridge, Va., and Jack O. Mazyck of Florence; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Lillian Moses
Lillian Edith Dawsey Moses, 92, of McClellanville, died July 18, 2008, at her residence.
Memorial services were held Thursday, July 24, 2008, at 6 p.m. at McClellanville United Methodist Church. Palmetto Cremation Society, Charleston, was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Moses was born July 31, 1915, in McClellanville. She was a career nurse and an instructor of Licensed Practical Nurses in Georgetown.
Surviving are a son, John Moses of Santa Fe, N.M.; a daughter, Elaine Youngman of McClellanville; two grandsons, Will Moses and Nathan Youngman; a granddaughter, Holland Youngman; and a great-granddaughter, Harper Youngman.

Kathryn W. Scurry
Kathryn W. Scurry, 84, of Lake City, died Saturday, July 26, 2008 at her home.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Nazareth United Methodist Church of Olanta, directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta, with burial in the New Town Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation was held at the church one hour prior to the Tuesday service. Floyd Funeral Home is assisting the family of Mrs. Scurry.
Born in Memphis, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Joe Mack Warlick and Ulrika Sims Warlick. She was a retired seamstress with Wentworth Manufacturing Co., and was a member of the Nazareth United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie D. Scurry.
She is survived by: two daughters, Nancy Burris (Charles) of Little River, and Margie McKenzie (J.C.) of Lake City; two sons, David Scurry of Lake City and Ernest Scurry (Shirley) of Turbeville; one sister, Margaret Amendola of Rye, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and two special great-grandchildren, Breanna and Josh.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Nazareth United Methodist Church; McLeod Hospice program; or the charity of one's choice.
