Debris in the roadway is being blamed for a four-car accident that resulted in seven non-life-threatening injuries Thursday morning.
The accident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. between the bridges connecting Georgetown and the Waccamaw Neck.
According to S.C Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins, debris — believed to be a bed cover — blew out the back of a truck. The driver of the car behind the truck stopped to remove the debris which caused four cars to rear end each other.
Two of the cars caught on fire.
Collins said the seven people who were taken to the hospital suffered minor injuries.
North and southbound traffic was delayed for about an hour as emergency workers tended to victims and cleared the scene. Southbound lanes were reopened by 9 a.m. It took longer to get the northbound lanes cleared.
Collins said the incident is under investigation and it’s unknown if any charges will be filed.
Details about the accident were posted on the Georgetown Times Facebook page and website — www.gtowntimes.com — beginning at 7:40 a.m.
