Hooray for "green" businesses

I would like to commend the efforts of one of our local grocery chains, BiLo, for their dedication in encouraging the use of cloth over plastic shopping bags.

They now have them displayed "in your face" at their checkout counter. In the past, recycling was encouraged by crediting customers five cents per bag for bringing their own, and it is so inspiring that they have taken an additional step forward in helping rid our town of the scourge of plastic bags.

*If there are other stores along the Waccamaw Neck that encourage recycling, please support their efforts by thanking them and letting them know we appreciate it. We must all try to be good stewards of this beautiful planet on which we live.

Re: Gloria Ford column and Michelle Obama

In regards to Gloria Barr Ford's church news column:  My question is, "What does this article detailing Michelle Obama's work history and her Georgetown roots have to do with church news?
At the end of the article we are told that we should be proud because of her Georgetown roots and the fact that they are the first black president and first lady.

I measure people by their character, not the color of one's skin or from where they come.

The Obama administration, contrary to the teachings of Jesus Christ, has implemented policies that promote the alternative/gay lifestyle, the killing of unborn babies, and the destruction of the family by making more families reliant on government.

Newspaper Headlines

Editor’s note: This letter was in response to a column in our sister newspaper, Waccamaw Times.

Mr. Brock,

As a regular reader of The Waccamaw Times, I look forward to your weekly column.
I find it interesting that the February 28th edition, which includes your column on the correctness of the “Pope Benedict to Quit” headline was delivered to me just minutes before The Pope’s resignation took effect at 2 p.m. that afternoon.
I’m afraid I must differ with your opinion on the legitimacy of the headline. Space was not an issue. “Pope Resigns,” or “Pope to Resign,” or “Pope Benedict to Resign” would have worked in the space allowed.

While grammatically correct, “Quit” is a hard alternative to “Resign” and I believe was used to unnecessarily spike the story.
Granted that as a Catholic my antenna went up when I saw the headline and I did write a short objection to the editor (which was not printed).
I’m not looking for an apology from the Sun News editor. I just feel it could have been handled better.
