Shane Lawshe is facing the death penalty in connection with last year's slaying of a well-known Litchfield resident and now his uncle has been hit with a wrongful death lawsuit as a result of the murder.
Lawshe, 34, will stand trial next year for the Sept. 26, 2007, killing of 63-year-old Julianne Blakeley who was stabbed to death inside her Norris Road home. He appeared briefly in court Wednesday where he pled not guilty to the charges of murder, rape, arson, kidnapping, and burglary.
Last year, Solicitor Greg Hembree said the "sheer brutality of the crime itself was an important factor" for deciding to seek the death penalty in the case.
Lawshe -- who has been in protective custody at the Georgetown County Detention Center since he was arrested Oct. 3 in Horry County -- met Blakeley when he was working for Edwin Cox who owns a painting business.
Authorities learned of Blakeley's death after responding to a fire call at her home. A neighbor spotted smoke coming from the house and called 911.
Investigators say after stabbing Blakeley to death, Lawshe set fires in various parts of the house and fled the scene. Workers from Midway Fire Rescue extinguished the flames and then found Blakeley's lifeless body on an upstairs bed.
Early in the investigation, Lawshe -- who had worked on Blakeley's home repairing water damage in early September -- was considered a prime suspect. He was arrested while sitting in traffic at a swing bridge in Little River when an alert motorist recognized his vehicle and called 911.
Lawshe is being represented by Myrtle Beach attorneys Tommy Brittain and Natasha Hanna.
Pre-trial motions will be heard in February and the trial is tentatively set to begin March 30.
Lawsuit
No court date has been set for the lawsuit filed against Cox, owner of Cox Painting.
The suit was filed by Clay Thornton, a son of Blakeley, who is representing his mother's estate. The suit also names Lawshe as a defendant.
Edwin Cox is identified in the lawsuit as Lawshe's uncle but last year Cox told the Georgetown Times Lawshe was his half-brother. He also said Lawshe was a subcontractor and not one of his employees.
The suit states Lawshe "gained entry to the house as a result of having worked (there) for water damage cleanup as an employee of Cox." Once inside the house, Lawshe inflicted deadly wounds on Blakeley, causing her to suffer "and agonizing and painful death."
Lawshe's actions also caused Blakeley's family to incur "various monetary losses and sustained immeasurable loss by way of loss of society, love and companionship," according to the suit.
Thornton, in the lawsuit, maintains Cox hired Lawshe to work for him "when he knew or should have known that he had an extensive criminal past including violent crimes, and that he was in violation of probation at the time he was working for Cox."
The suit said Cox "had every reason to anticipate that an employee with a history of criminal activity and violent crime might well commit another violent crime even if the crime was not identical to the employee's previous offenses."
Lawshe's rap sheet includes burglaries and thefts. He had been in prison until early August of last year but was released on parole.
The suit does not ask for a specific award amount, leaving that decision to a jury.
Cox told the Georgetown Times last year if he had thought Lawshe was a violent person he would have never hired him to do any work for his company.
"I would never have let anyone in (Blakeley's) house who would hurt anyone," Cox said.

Mr. Lawshe is innocent until proven guilty! Mr. Cox is not responsible for what someone else did. This was the perfect time to pin a murder charge on someone with a criminal background. The lawsuit is just for more money. Its not like they dont have enough! Posted by Innocent Until Proven Guilty on 8/27/2008

Everyone seems to be getting ahead of the judicial system. You know innocent until proven guilty. You can't sue someone for doing something wrong before it has been shown without a resonable doubt to be true. The only thing I see that he has done is looked after a member of his family like every other family in georgetown has done. All you high and mighty, better than thou people of georgetown need to check your own skeletons in the closet before casting stones at someone else. But in the end after all the dirty laundry on both sides is aired for the whole world to see you will be able to see both families in a new light good or bad. Who are any of you to judge? There's only one judge & he will definitely make the right decision. People are suffering & hurting from a senseless killing (just like Jesus did) so why are you all making their suffering & pain worse? People you all have a lot to wake up to one day, especially if you don't know Jesus. Don't ridicule other people you need to love & respect one another. Justice shall prevail. May God be with all of you . Don't forget we aren't called to love the sin but we are called to love the sinner and in this situation I'm sure that is hard to do (whomever the sinner may be). Only God & that person or persons knows the answer. Posted by A Sinner Saved By Grace on 8/25/2008

Everyone should realize that there are TWO families hurting now...not just the ONE Blakley family. Mr. Lawshe is responsible for his crime, not the family member who was only trying to better him by giving him a job. No doubt, Mr. Lawshe is a sick person but do you honesly think that his family would have let him work for them if they knew that he was going to murder someone? They knew of his background, but just because someone has committed crimes in the past, doesn't mean they are going to murder someone. And if the lawsuit isn't about money, then what is it about? Teach them a lesson. Make sure this never happens again. Put together workshops educating employers on how to select their employees carefully. If it was really about making sure this never happened to anyone else, things similar to that should be done...not lawsuits. Take everything away from Mr. Cox...money...business...take everything. Bet that will keep EVERYONE from hiring a murderer! And to JWC...let me know when ya'll start burning all that money...I'd like to see that. Posted by Lawsuit? Money? on 8/25/2008

Only God knows if Lawshe is guilty or not. Everyone is calling him a killer without having all the facts, which we may never even get. From all the stories I've heard, sounds like the cops should investigate a little closer to the victims own family, or EX-family. As far as Mr. Cox, I know of him personally and he has never hurt anyone or would never hurt anyone intentionally. Trying to do a good deed by giving someone a job shouldn't turn him into the bad guy. Whether it is about money or not shouldn't matter. A life is gone and possibly another on the way out. Shouldn't people put themselves in the shoes of family members who are still here and realize life is too short to be placing blame and pointing fingers when we're not the one's who make the last call. I am offended by the comments from "people just want money"! First of all, I was raised in Georgetown , have many family and friends that still reside there, and we have never been the victim of crime...until now. To state that the majority of Georgetown County has a criminal background only sheds light on your complete ignorance and brings into question the type of people that YOU associate with!! Furthermore, an employer CAN and SHOULD do background checks on their employees. In many companies one cannot even get a job without "peeing in a cup" first", much less being thoroughly checked out for a criminal record!! Mr. Cox knew that Shane Lawshe could be a danger. He was well aware of his record...he beat up his own mother, for crying out loud!! But, the person that DIDN'T KNOW about this recent parolee was, none other than , our dear Julianne Blakeley. I guarantee you that had she known of his criminal record this single woman living alone would never have allowed him to step foot in her home. Now let me get to the most important thing...this lawsuit is NOT ABOUT MONEY! Her children will probably never receive a dime from it and would rather burn it than touch anything that is associated with the monster that killed their mother! It is about justice and doing something that will aid in protecting society going forward. Money will never ease the agonizing pain that our family and her friends are going through! We have an obligation to take what we have learned from this horrific crime and become activists is ensuring that this never happens to anyone else. There has been negligence on all fronts. First of all, Shane Lawshe should not have been released on parole! (that is a discussion for another time!) But he was released, and within a month of receiving this "second chance" he murdered my first cousin! Where was her second chance? She never even got a first chance to protect herself from him because information about this vile human was withheld from her. That, Mr. ignorant "people just want money", is what this lawsuit is about!!! Mr. Cox absolutely had an obligation and responsibility to "protect" Julianne Blakeley by keeping Shane Lawshe out of her home, or giving her the information about his criminal record so that she could make the decision to keep him out of her home! I for one, will do everything in my power to see that justice is done. We will never get over this tragedy...words cannot express the profound sadness and grief that we are all dealing with. Our lives have been forever altered..... Posted by JWC on 8/23/2008

My understanding is a person has to have a job before they can get out of jail, maybe I'm wrong. Even so they have to make a living somehow or they will find a way to live. Everyone needs someone to blame for the murder why not blame someone who has a criminal record. He may be guilty but there's also a good chance someone else may have wanted her dead for other reasons. Posted by Maybe Guilty Maybe Not on 8/23/2008

Julianne Blakeley was one of the grandest, most regal people I have ever known. For her life to end in such a deamonic and inhumane way is probably more than her children can ever hope to overcome. They have every right to point every finger that they have (all forty of them) at every person whose neglience could have - in the slightest degree - aided in the slaughter of thier mother! What does a criminal record even mean. Lots of criminals turn their lives around and it is not crazy for someones family to give them a job in hopes that it sets them on the right path. No one knows the truth yet, the man is innocent until proven guilty. The victims family should hold off on the lawsuit until the outcome of a trial. That trial cannot take place here on the internet. If he is convicted and sentenced to death is that not enough? Both families are broken, of this I have no doubt, but what good will it do to leave one broke? It won't change a thing. Her children won't feel better. And for those of you who say it is not about the money, then what is the lawsuit for? Is it punishment for daring to have a little faith in someone you love? For hoping for the best in people. At this point that didn't work out for Cox family. Why punish them more? Posted by local on 8/22/2008

I agree with the first comment somewhat...Lawshe's family shouldn't be held responsible for that crime. What is a lawsuit going to do? The crime has been committed. Posted by Agree on 8/22/2008

Yes you can NOT hire someone because they have a criminal history, especially when previous offenses include theft and burglary. When you are working on someone's home you are in their personal space and your employees should be upstanding individuals. I certainly wouldn’t want anyone in or near my home or family with that kind of history. As a business person it is the owners responsibility. If you went to a restaurant and an employee copied your credit card information are you telling us you would not expect the restaurant to be responsible for the actions of that employee and the charges made to your account? Whatever. Mr. Cox may not have know Lawshe was going to do this but that is why reputable businesses run background checks on potential employees and most even run credit checks to see if they have the potential to steal or commit other crimes out of desperation. The family is not out for money they did not even ask for any specific amount. Hopefully this will make other businesses be more careful about who they hire. If Lawshe had not been working for Cox he would have never been in or near the home and it would not have become his target. Oh and by the way that TV repairman you had at your house last week had previous charges of sexual offenses and kidnapping, but hey your child should be fine in the house with him while you walk next door everyone has to have a job, right? Go ahead and name the parole board and the sitting judge they are the ones that let him back on the street. If he was in violation of his parole then hold the Sheriff's department responsible for not picking him before this happened. I think it is time for each person to be held accountable for his or her own actions and stop trying to put the blame on someone else. Posted by Why stop there? on 8/22/2008

The "People Just Want Money" is perhaps the most ridiculous comment I have ever read. You've got to be kidding. Do you really think that the majority of Georgetown County residents have criminal records? I lived in Georgetown County for many years and still have family and friends there. None of them have criminal records. Perhaps the writer doesn't fully comprehend that Lawshe committed VIOLENT crimes. I find it extremely difficult to believe that Mr. Cox was unaware of what crimes Mr. Lawshe committed, in particular because they are relatives. What has happened to accountability? By the way, noone is "trying to get money" off of the murder of Julie Blakeley. I know that the family is mourning her loss everyday. Obviously, you just don't get it. Everyone has choices, yes, & Mr. Cox had the choice NOT to employee Lawshe. If you're going to pay people to do a job, then you have to take responsibility for what they do while they're on your "dime", in your employ, on your time! That's, unfortunately, the price you pay for being in business for yourself. Hope he has good insurance & a good lawyer. Posted by That's where you're wrong! on 8/22/2008

Mr. Cox is not responsible for Ms. Blakley's death. What is her son doing... trying to get money off of his mother's murder? Everyone knows that Mr. Cox would have never let Lawshe in the house if he thought he was going to do something wrong. You can't NOT hire someone because they have a criminal background. If that was the case, majority of Georgetown County would be without jobs. Mr. Lawshe is a grown man who made his own choices and he should be held responsible, not his family.
