Waccamaw High School's Jaquan Rogers signed to play football with the Greenville Titans last week.

"It means a lot to the entire team," Rogers said. "It's hard work from the day you step into ninth grade as a freshman on up. It's the way you work in the classroom and everywhere you go the way you carry yourself."

The Titans are a club team that plays against other club teams and college junior varsity teams. Titans' players attend colleges in the Upstate area.

Rogers plans to spend two years taking general studies courses at Greenville Tech and then move on to a bigger school.

After last season, which was the Titans' second season of play, eight players received offers from NAIA colleges or Division 1, 2 and Division 3 schools.

"It's a great opportunity," Waccamaw coach Tyronne Davis said. "Jaquan's one of our athletes who worked very hard in football. He's one of our captains."

After his junior season Rogers started thinking seriously about using football to further his education.

"I had a pretty good season and I wanted to be better," Rogers said. "I realized you had to be bigger, stronger and faster to get into college, so I started weight lifting."

Davis said as a senior Rogers was a team leader.

"He has a good relationship with the other kids," Davis said. "They listen to him and he was kind of the liaison between the coaches and the players. We always talked to Jaquan if there was an issue we needed to address with the team."

Rogers played outside linebacker for Waccamaw but Davis said he'll probably play in the secondary for Greenville.

"It's going to be a little different for him but this will give him an opportunity to grow," Davis said. "He needs this foundation to help him get to the next level."

Rogers was also a member of Waccamaw's baseball team. The Warriors lost in the District VI finals on Wednesday night.
