Goat Island Grill tapped for cuisine

One of Georgetown's newest restaurants has received some critical acclaim from a Myrtle Beach television station.

Beach TV has named Goat Island Grill, located on Front Street downtown, as one of the "Top Five Restaurants" for Lowcountry cuisine and atmosphere on the Grand Strand. A list of five top restaurants on the Strand are compiled every three to four months by the television station.

A crew -- including "The Top Five Restaurants Review" host Francesca Sullivan-Hester -- filmed a segment for an upcoming show in the restaurant last week. Restaurant owners David Wilson and Chris Majors say they were excited by the news.

"This is a great recognition for our restaurant," Wilson said. "We have come a long way in the past year or so we've been open."

The show should air in January or February, according to Sullivan-Hester, who chose the Goat Island Grill as one of the top five.

"I'd recommend this restaurant to anyone in Georgetown because the location is great and the food is excellent," Sullivan-Hester said. "They have definitely put their own signature twist on things."

The first thing she liked about the restaurant was the location, with two outside decks overlooking the Georgetown Harbor.

Sampling the restaurant's most popular original dishes, she says she was impressed. Sullivan-Hester tasted the Big Gig, which is a conglomeration of crab cakes, shrimp, scallops and a piece of flounder (which can be prepared a number of ways); a new entree called Gig Gumbolaya (a cross between gumbo and jambalaya); their shrimp boil which features a special seasoning recipe; and deserts, including the Black River Mud Brownie and their key lime pie.

"I wanted to find places that use fresh, local seafood and area produce to create Lowcountry cuisine that tastes like it used to back in the day," Sullivan-Hester said. "We found the Goat Island Grill through referrals from a lot of local people who really enjoy it."

She adds that the restaurant's use of different wines with different foods made the meal even more pleasant.

"I loved their extensive wine list," Sullivan-Hester said. "I can tell they really enjoy pairing wine with food."

The Goat Island Grill will hold a special wine dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 22. Chefs will serve a seven-course meal with different wines from South America. For more information, or to make reservations for this or any other night, call the restaurant at 843-527-3500.

Beach TV is on Time Warner Channel 14 and HTC Channel 101 in the Georgetown County area. Once the segment airs on television -- in January or February from 7:30 to 8 p.m. -- it can be viewed anytime on the Web site at www.tripsmarter.com.
