Georgetown native Jordyn Barber is hoping to make a career on both sides of the camera in Hollywood and she is off to a good start.
She has already played a part on the television show The Shield and next week she can be seen on the hit ABC sitcom The Middle.
The 22-year-old Waccamaw High graduate — daughter of Brendon and Pamela Barber — has been attending the University of Southern California since 2008 where she studied interactive media.
Pursuing film degree
She is now pursuing a degree in film and TV production and will graduate in 2016.
“I love acting. My passion is making films,” Barber said during a recent interview while she was back home visiting family and friends.
Her mother said she knew her daughter had what it takes to follow her dreams when she was in middle school and auditioned for the part on The Shield which first aired in 2005.
Between classes at USC, Barber has been auditioning for roles in television shows and movies.
In ‘The Middle’ on ABC
In next week’s episode of The Middle, Barber’s character is in the same class as Sue Heck, one of the three children of the main family of the program.
“It’s a short part. We are in the class together and I set up the joke,” Barber said.
She said she went to the casting office three times before she was given the part.
Barber said she also had a part in a planned resurrection of the 1970s drama Wonder Woman but the pilot was not picked up by any network.
She also played a role in the short film Prom Night, produced by UCLA graduate students Steven Huffaker and Simon Savely.
Her first role, in 2004, was in a Citibank commercial but her part was cut from the final edit.
‘Tackle it from all sides’
Barber is hoping next week’s exposure will help her land even more roles.
“I want to tackle it from all sides. I love acting but I also make my own projects and star in my own stuff,” she said.
Her parents both said they are extremely proud of her career.
“She knows the time and effort it takes to break into the business. She knows there is nothing you cannot do if you work hard,” Pamela Barber said.
Brendon Barber — also a member of Georgetown City Council — said he is proud of Jordyn’s “toughness and aggressiveness.”
The episode of The Middle with Barber is called “The Smile” and can be seen at 8 p.m. Wednesday on WCIV-TV 4 in Charleston and WPDE-TV 15 in Myrtle Beach.
