The Andrews High baseball team opened the Class AA playoffs with a 7-3 win at Dillon on Thursday.
Hunter Cox pitched all seven innings to earn the win for the Yellow Jackets (10-11) and helped supply the offense with three hits and one RBI.
Justin Powell and Dylan McConnell each drove in two runs for Andrews. The ‘Jackets will continue the playoffs on Saturday night at Barnwell. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
“It was an excellent win for us,” Andrews coach Roland Clemons said. “I can’t say enough about the way we played. Hunter pitched a great game, we had good defense behind him and we were able to get the timely hits.”
CHERAW 7, WACCAMAW 5
Waccamaw (13-10) held a 5-3 advantage going into the sixth inning, but three errors in the frame allowed Cheraw to regain the momentum and the lead.
Cheraw scored three times in the inning to take a 6-5 advantage and added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
“They made us pay for our mistakes,” said Waccamaw coach Jeff Gregory, whose team will continue the Class AA playoffs on Saturday, hosting Wade Hampton at 5 p.m. “When you have those kind of errors, you are going to get the result we had. We have to do a better job.”
Aaron Bishop had two hits for Waccamaw and John Whetstone drove in two runs.
SOFTBALL
Georgetown High opened the Class AAA playoffs with a statement, rolling over Hilton Head 20-0 in five innings on Thursday.
Amber Mahaffey picked up the win for the Bulldogs (11-6) striking out 11 and allowing only one hit.
Georgetown had 18 hits on the night, getting three each from Bailey Tice and Andrea Pieterse.
“It’s a great way for us to start the playoffs,” Georgetown coach Al Hutchinson said. “Amber pitched a magnificent game, she worked the corners well and never allowed them to get anything going.
“Offensively, we did a good job of adjusting to the slower pitching (style of Hilton Head). Everyone was able to contribute.”
Georgetown will continue the playoffs on Saturday, visiting Bluffton for a 3 p.m. start.
WACCAMAW 9, MARION 0
Ashley Czechner struck out 15 and allowed only one hit as the Warriors started the Class AA playoffs by taking the measure of Marion.
Nikki Legg had three hits to lead the Warriors (25-1) and Shelly Strickland drove in three runs.
Waccamaw will continue the playoffs on Saturday, hosting Edisto at 1 p.m.
“We executed throughout the game,” Warriors coach Scott Streiffert said. “We got runners on base, moved them over and took advantage of the opportunities we had.”
CARVERS BAY 9, LAMAR 6
Whitney Baxley and Carsen Cagle each had two hits to power the visiting Bears past Lamar.
Carvers Bay scored five runs in the third to take control of the game and built the advantage to 8-2 headed into the seventh.
Brittany Owens was the winning pitcher for the Bears, who continue the Class A playoffs on Saturday at Academic Magnet. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
“It was a total team effort,” Carvers Bay coach Rory Owens said. “We were ready to play and everyone did their part.”
DILLON 3, ANDREWS 0
Mary Ellen Morris and Lyndsay Lambert had hits for the Yellow Jackets, but it wasn’t enough as Andrews fell short at Dillon.
Andrews continues the Class AA playoffs on Friday night, hosting Woodland at 6:30 p.m.
