Wil Waninger, a graduate of Georgetown High School, was named Mr. USC 2009 ahead of 19 other male contestants during the University of South Carolina's recent Bodybuilding and Fitness Championship in Columbia.
Waninger, a third-year bio-medical engineering student at the USC Honors College, is the first contender in recent memory to win out of the lightweight division - he won both the lightweight and overall titles.
The competition included both men and women of all weight classes and required each male contestant to complete a routine of poses in front of five judges, as well as a pose comparison with the other contestants in the same weight class.
Men were judged on muscle definition, symmetry and presentation.
Bodybuilding and Fitness Club President Eric Brei said it is very rare for a lightweight to win the event.
As Waninger said to the Daily Gamecock, USC's student newspaper, "I did not expect to win at all. I thought I would do well in the lightweight class, but winning it overall was a complete shock."
