Editorial: Baseball and softball will pay off for county

Published on 1/10/2012

Yellow and white balls will fly through the air this summer at the county’s new 8 Oaks Recreation Complex, and will likely lead to a million bucks for Georgetown County and local businesses.
Bunches of hungry kids and their coaches, moms and dads and friends will travel from around the South for a couple of Dixie Softball tournaments, a Dixie baseball tournament and more.
Those hungry folks will get a taste of hospitality and a taste of grits and eggs, shrimp and grits, hamburgers and hot dogs and more. They’ll sleep in beds in motels and hotels and beach houses, and they’ll see the sights.
Good fun and good sportsmanship will prevail, and so will the good sounds of cash registers as they go “ka-ching, ka-ching.”
The big reason for building the 8 Oaks Park and other recreational facilities in an overall $80-million-plus Capital Improvement Plan is to serve local residents. Along the way, though, hosting these tournaments and others will help generate revenue for all sorts of local businesses.
July is a hot month on the thermometer, and it’ll be a hot month as the park opens with three tournaments.
The Dixie Softball Darlings — girls 7 and 8 — and Dixie Angels — girls 9 and 10 — will come to Georgetown from 24 teams around 11 Southeastern states to compete in their World Series championships.
It’s been 28 years since a softball World Series has been in Georgetown. And, it’s the first time ever that the boys’ 11-12 state “O” Zone championship has been held here.
Other recreation facilities are a-building around the county — your tax dollars at work.
Georgetown County Parks and Recreation Department is hosting these tournaments and working closely with youth baseball and softball groups and community volunteers.
More are needed, and the department is also seeking financial support through various sponsorships.
If you’d like to help with these tournaments, provide entertainment, financial backing, host or help with events, just raise your hand to volunteer.
Then, pick up your phone or click on your computer mouse to get in touch with Parks and Recreation.
Paul McCulloch is Recreation Manager. You may call him at (843) 545-3319 or send an e-mail to:

And when July rolls around, make sure to take yourself out to the ball games.
