East Bay Park boat landing to be replaced

A state grant will pay for the City of Georgetown to replace the boat landing at East Bay Park.
The city applied for a Coastal Public Access Improvement Grant from the state Department of Health and Environmental Control in May and received $101,200. The grant requires the city to chip-in a 10 percent match.
Interim City Administrator Carey Smith said the landing is a "real asset," and the repairs will heighten that.
"We know East Bay Park is heavily used," Smith said. "We think that this will really mean a lot to the boating community because of the use of this particular park. We think it could result in some heavier use because of the improvements."
The grant will pay for the steel pilings to be replaced with reinforced plastic ones, which don't corrode in the salt water; and for the concrete apron and floating docks to be replaced.
"It's almost a complete reconstruction of the landings," Smith said.
A kayak launching area will also be repaired. Smith said the current launching area is rarely used because it is in such disrepair.
The first part of the project is a survey of the site by McSweeney Engineers to determine boundaries and provide a topographic profile.
The boat landing will close sometime in the fall when repair work begins. Smith expects it to reopen in the spring.
