Voters in the city of Georgetown went to the polls today to choose Democratic nominees in the primary races for mayor and three city council seats. The winners will represent the party in the Nov. 3 general election against the Republican contenders. In the council race one incumbent, Brendon Barber, will share the ballot with newcomers Jeanette Ard, Dedric Bonds, John D. Henry, Ricky Ferdon and Racheal Reddick-Williams. The top three vote-getters will proceed to November where Republicans Paige Sawyer, an incumbent, and newcomers Bruce Yablin and Jim Moody will also be on the ballot. In the race for mayor, incumbent Lynn Wood Wilson is facing party challenges from three other current city council members – Rudolph Bradley, Jack Scoville and Peggy Wayne. The Democratic winner will face Republican Marty Tennant in November. If he collects enough valid signatures, petition candidate Bob Sizemore will also be on the ballot this fall. All registered voters who live in the City of Georgetown— Democrats and Republicans — can vote in today’s primary.
Runoff possibilities
In the mayor’s race, if none of the four receives 50 percent of the vote today, a runoff will take place June 23. There is also a possibility a runoff will be needed in the council race. Since there are six candidates running for three seats in the council race, the total number of votes cast for all council candidates will be divided by three. That number is then divided by two to get the “magic number” needed to determine the winners. A candidate must reach that majority (magic number) in order to move to the November election. If less than three candidates meet the majority requirement, there will be a runoff.
Polling places
The seven polling places in the city remain open until 7 p.m. They are: • The Georgetown County Library at 405 Cleland St. • Dreamkeepers Community Cultural Arts Center at 1623 Gilbert St. • The Beck Administrative and Education Center at 2018 Church St. • Georgetown Presbyterian Church at 558 Black River Rd. • Maryville Elementary School at 2125 Poplar St. • Penny Royal - National Guard Armory 3777 South Fraser St. • Winyah - National Guard Armory, 3777 South Fraser St.
Results available online and in print
The results will be posted at www.gtowntimes.com after they are tallied. Updates as the votes are counted will be posted on the Georgetown Times Facebook page. Reaction from the winners and others will be included in Wednesday’s edition of the Georgetown Times
