A 42-year-old Pawleys Island man was arrested one day after he allegedly attacked an elderly woman, who is recovering from surgery, as she walked in her neighborhood. The 71-year-old woman was walking on Voyager Drive in Pawleys Island at about 9:20 a.m. Saturday as part of her therapy due to recent spinal cord surgery. She said while walking she felt a “hard blow” to her back and then saw a man she never met was hitting her with a closed fist, an incident report states. After he hit the woman, the man ran in front of her and stared at her and never said a word, states the report. Bystanders who saw the incident identified the man as “Mark,” although they did not know his last name. They also showed the deputy where the man lives. The deputy knew exactly who the man was because he had arrested him earlier in the month on a burglary charge. He obtained a warrant and the next day the man was arrested on a charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Neil Johnson said. The man’s mother told the deputy her son is schizophrenic and refuses to remain on medication.

A 37-year-old woman who, according to the report, had a strong odor of alcohol and slurred speech, said she had an argument with the people on the shrimp boat docked behind her. She said the captain of that shrimp boat called her names. The shrimp boat captain said the complainant was the one who started with his wife. He said the intoxicated woman brandished a flare gun, although she never pointed it at anyone. “She waved it around a lot,” the report states. Other witnesses confirmed the captain’s version of the events but he said he did not want to press charges. • A 55-year-old man is accused of trying to rape his 40-year-old girlfriend inside his big rig after the two smoked crack Sunday night. The woman told deputies she and her boyfriend were “hanging out” when he decided to go buy some crack. “The victim stated they smoked some of the crack and then the suspect wanted to have sex and she did not,” the report states. They were in an 18-wheeler at the time, so the man pulled over near David Ray Road on Highway 701 and tried to remove the woman’s clothing, but she was able to get out of the truck and run into the woods. The man drove away and the woman walked out of the woods and someone gave her a ride to Plantersville where she called 911. The woman had visible scratches and her clothing was torn. So far, the suspect has not been arrested. The report does not say if the woman will be charged for her admitted drug use. • Deputies responded to an alarm at a home on Pleasant Hill Drive Monday night. When they arrived they discovered the woman at the house had an outstanding warrant. When the deputy told the 40-year-old woman to place her hands behind her back, she started resisting. “I took the suspect to the ground and she would not comply,” the deputy wrote. The resistance continued so the deputy used a Taser on the woman. She then continued to resist, so she was Tased a second time and the deputy was then able to get the handcuffs on the woman. She was charged with resisting arrest along with the original bench warrant charge. • The owner of 521 Mini Mart says a 22-year-old man was caught stealing deer corn from her store Monday night. A witness told the owner he saw the man loading 8-10 bags of the corn in his truck. When she asked the clerk if the corn had been paid for, she was told “no.” She went out and tried to stop the man from driving away with the corn but was unsuccessful. No arrest has been made.
