An Andrews police officer and a Georgetown County Detention Center worker were both arrested on theft charges Wednesday night, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office.

Andrews Police Officer Patrick Cumbee, 30, and Detention Center Officer Martin Grice, are charged with Misconduct in Office and Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, said Sheriff's Office Investigator George Smith.

The theft involves a motorcycle stolen from Horry County, Smith said.

The investigation began Monday when members of the Organized Crime Bureau received information from a Sheriff's Office employee that Grice was attempting to sell a stolen motorcycle.

"Once members of the OCB received this information they, along with Sheriff's investigators, discovered that Grice sold the motorcycle to Cumbee," Smith said.

As the investigation continued, Sheriff's investigators, members of the OCB and members of the Andrews Police Department found that Cumbee purchased the motorcycle from Grice and took the motorcycle to a "chop shop" operated by 26-year-old Dedrick McCray of Spruce Street in Andrews, said Smith.

During the execution of a search warrant, investigators located the motorcycle in addition to other motorcycles. At this point another search warrant was obtained for the additional motorcycles.

Once the second search warrant was obtained, it was discovered that parts on the other motorcycles were from other stolen motorcycles. These motorcycles and the one Grice sold Cumbee were seized along with other evidence items relating to the operation of a chop shop.

McCray, owner of a chop shop, was charged with Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Chop Shop, and Receiving Stolen Goods.

Grice, Cumbee, and McCray turned themselves in at the Sheriff's office yesterday where they were arrested and transported to the Georgetown County Detention Center. All three are currently awaiting a bond hearing.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Neil Johnson said an administrative review of the criminal case is being conducted to determine Grice's future employment at the Detention Center. Andrews Police Chief Harvey Knox was unavailable for comment.

First off I would like to say that i am very disappointed at all of them. Georgetown and Andrews is becoming a mess. Everyone needs to just mind their own business and stay out of everyone else business. I believe that all of this came from someone who is jealous and wanted these men locked up. If this is the case then the little snake in the grass needs to watch it because what goes around comes around. The police in both of these small towns need to focus on the drug dealers, sex offenders and the killer because these are the people that are making the community terrible. I use to live in Georgetown and i dont even come to visit because everyone is to concerned about everything excerpt the right thing. Mrs. Gloria i guess your son can do no wrong huh. LOL yeah i bet you regret all the comments that you made about some of the other people in Georgetown and andrews not raising there children that way. Honestly i am not trying to step on any toes but after reading some of the comments it is funny that when i left ten years ago there has been no change the people are still the same and still doing the same oh same oh. Yeah i know that i went over the edge by putting gloria's name in her but she needs to know to sweep around her own door and do what she needs do to for all her grandkids not just one but all. I know two of these young men personally and i cant believe that they would do something like this especially Mr. McCray he had so much going for himself. I hope that this teaches them all a valuable lesson.

The People in Andrews cant get together and help one another out because the people in Andrews are concerned about themselves and look down on each other and is always in somebody business thats why alot of folks move away and dont have to worry about the drama in Andrews the people in Andrews feed off of others to make theirselves seem better hint the word SEEMS because they are no better or no less than the ones in Andrews!!!!

I am sorry for this incident. I know that Pat was raised to know right from wrong. It comes a time when you have to let that child go. No I don't fault his parents but in due season we reap what we sow. We are living in a day and time where God is revealing who we really are. I pray for all thoseyoung men. Life is too short for commotion and for accepting wrong doing. The comment that says innoscence untill proven guilty, these young men guilty. They just need to repent and not do it again. It was a matter of time before he got caught. I forgive him and I pray they get their lives together. You can change if you want. There is nothing to hard that Jesus can't fix. There's no habit so strong that Jesus can't break. If we can forgive him then everyone can. Sometimes if you continue to do that which you do, then yes God will reveal you. Please everyone we all need to be conscience about how we treat people and what we do to people because we will reap what we sow. I love everyone

If the people of Andrews would only take this much time to figure out how WE as a people can make situations better for the WHOLE we would not have time to keep posting. Whether we voice our opinion or not, what difference does it make. If I was the Cumbee Family, I would not even stoop to the level of this. Every family has problems. I have problems. Jesus did not promise us that we would not have problems. But, misery loves company and when you have so much time to spend worrying about someone else's problems, evaluate YOURSELF. Let's worry about why we have so many church folk passing judgement on the next person. That's why sinners won't come to church to get their lives straight. Take time to pray for this family and leave it in GOD's hand. Nobody else's opinion matters. Let's get together as a people to make something positive come out of Andrews. Start a program for the young thugs in Andrews to get them off the streets before its too late. Talk about something positive and see how many people respond - ZERO. If you want something positive to come out of this - SPEAK TO ME. Negative responses do not bother me because I know I am not perfect and neither are you.

Please leave the family alone. "Taint of blood" went out of fashion with the Magna Carta nearly 1,000 years ago.

LEAVE HIS PARENTS OUT OF THIS!!!! Andrews is still the same! Nothing has changed, everyone is still in everybody's business. If trouble haven't knocked on your door yet live a little longer! That's why the majority people there are still broke busted and disgusted b/c they are all up in other folks business. GET A LIFE PEOPLE!!!!!

To those who don't know the whole story need to keep their mouth shut or go stuff something in it. Is this all you noisey ass people got to do, is judge other people when you are probably doing worse. Stop worrying about pat and worry about yourself. Yea when you finish reading go talk about who left the comment!!!!!! Ignorance

First of all everyone is going about the situation the wrong way they shouldn't be juding these guys because they are innocent until proven guility all i could say is that andrews finest got caught this time

Posted by A Concern Citizen on 10/13/2008

to "be very careful" If you were "chased by an ambulance" it must have been for mental health reasons and obviously you "won" because you are posting and not locked up. Dont worry sooner or later they will get you. As for the outcome of me expressing my opinion what could be taken as slander by the Cumbee family? I have NOTHING against them and intend to keep them in prayer. I really dont know how they got drug into this in the first place.

Posted by LOL on 10/12/2008

To everyone!! Stop bashing!! The truth at hand is that Pat finally got caught. Justice has to be served. Sorry that Pat made an unwise decision but her did. A second chance has to be dealt in his heart not the situation. If a rapist/sex offender/muderer commits a crime they get punish by the laws of the land. In God's eyes yes he/she may be forgiven but we reap what we sow. You cannot take up for him in his wrong doing. To the Cumbee family...SORRY! But if this is God's way of making Pat realize that he cannot continue to do things in the dark and expect it not to come to a light, then who are we to stop the hands of the Almighty God!!This goes to all three suspects. God is not the author of confusion and all this is a bunch of mess. It greatly offends me that his sister can use profanity and God in the same sentence. The bigger picture of this matter is that whatever is God's will he knows best. Those guys were wrong. None of them thought about "WWJD", while performing the act. Its now left in the hands of God!! Pat you need to mind how you treat children of the most King!! I still pray that you get your heart and soul right wheter you are in jail or at home.

In response to the post by Jeezy, wasn't there a white offcer who was asked to leave from Andrews PD for doing the same thing? I think it was a few years ago. I cannot remember his name though. Maybe someone can answer this question.

Posted by flipflopsandhorses on 10/11/2008

Well. These are grown men. He knew the bike was stolen. That's why he took it to get the info erased off it. It has nothing to do with his parents. You touch the hot stove you get burned. I hope they enjoy their time in jail.

(LOL) Not an Amblance chaser, nor never claimed to be one, but I was chased by the Ambulance and WON. Therefore, I know exactly what I am talking about. By all means, "Express Your Opinions." The out-come may be very good for the Cumbee Family.

everything that i have said on here has been taking way out of text. NO i am not blaming MR. AND MRS. CUMBEE, damn it is a hard life out there and i believe they have raised their kids the same way most families do...raise them knowing right and wrong and then allow them to make their own decisions and mistakes. i just wanted to say that it would be nice if one of their kids were in the paper for something that they that was wonderful. i used to stay in BIG DAM, and yes i have met mr. and mrs. cumbee and they are one of the nicest people i know. so this has nothing to do with them. i really just wish kids, youg adults, grown ass men would grow up and know that when they make mistakes of any kind it makes everyone look bad. if you are anywhere in the myrtle beach, chs area and you tell someone that you are from ANDREWS...you get these looks like oh my nothing good has come from there. and that gives everyone in the community a bad rep. About PAT...no he is not the only one involved at all. there are other people. there are the 2 other men that were charged and then there are the ones that knew everything about it and said nothing. this town will be in my prayers and hopfully something will change for the best.

Posted by hamor on 10/11/2008

I would just like to start of saying for those of yall, who is putting Mr. Cumbee's parents into this and who are feeling so sorry for his parents, needs to leave them out of this.Because he is a grown man and they are not being hold nor judge for what he is doing or has done.Next, I would like to say he didn't know if the bike was stolen or not;he just wanted to rebuild it from nothing. There wasn't much of a bike when he got it so for those of you who are sayin this and that needs to try to get the real fact before posting your response. Most of yall is making like Pat is the only one being charged when he is not but nine time out of ten yall been had something to say about him and now yall got the chance to, with out putting yall name with the words and he think yall alot now yall can leave the stage. He got a good laugh out of this and no i'm not saying what he did was rite but i am saying he didn't know that the bike was stolen and he does enjoy the funny response that he has read. What most of yall don't know is everyone makes mistakes. And more parties was involve than just Pat so why is he the only one in the spot light? But anyway he is doing okay and yes he is out. Thanks the show is now over, have a bless life!!

As a resident of Andrews, I expect no more or no less from this town. SOME people in this town thrive on gossip and other people's misery. It's sad that grown people have to be this way and if you live hear long enough you'll know why people talk so down about Andrews. If a person is guilty or innocent, it will come to light and they will have to be handled accordingly by the law. If there's crookedness going on, that will come out too. What's done in the dark always comes to light so why is this any of our concern if it doesn't involve us directly. Get it together people and use the common sense you were given and think for a moment. We spend too much time getting in other people's business no matter what it's about. Everyone does have a right to their opinion, but some people really don't have room to speak about other people's wrong doings. I wish the family well and so sorry for this unfortunate situation. All we can hope for is that we learn from our mistakes and try to do better.

I agree with "fairness." Buying knock off stuff that is not supposed to be sold is a crime also. No matter how big or how small. Everyone has done something that they should not have done, sometime in there life. We just may or may not have gotten caught. So be thankful you got a second chance...these guys too will get a second chance because God is a forgiving God. While the world sits in judgement and will drag this out forever, God can fix it for them and throw it into the sea of forgetfulness. Let this situation with these guys be a lesson, and not a time to "gloat" in someone elses misery or troubles. While you are pointing one finger at these guys, there are "four" fingers pointing back at you.

Like Jesus said, "He without sin cast the first stone!" Some of you all are talking and dont have a right too. Like the old saints use to say, "Go sweep around your doorstep before you go stepping on someone elses." People in Georgetown County still bringing each other down, instead of lifting someone up. Dont worry about the Cumbee family we will SURVIVE. MOCK MY WORDS, ALWAYS HAVE AND ALWAYS WILL. Instead of examining other peoples life, examine yours like Paul said in Corinthians. To God be the Glory!!! with Love, Peace, and Happiness only from our Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ. I send pray out to all the families in this time of trial and tribulation.

to "be very careful" in my opinion you sound like an ambulance chaser, but not a very good one. As long as people are expressing their OPINIONS and are not presenting them as facts they are in the clear. I do wish everybody would stop the useless complaining but freedom of speech is their right. As for the accused, I am sure they will get a fair trial. I do hope they make an example of the officer if he is guilty though, police should be held to a higher standard. The new chief should be looked at to see if he had any knowledge of the chop shop as well. I am sorry for the families and will put you all in my prayers.

My girlfriend & I got caught up in a situation that we didn't have anything 2do with, all we did was give someone a ride,we were not aware of what was gonna take place,my girlfriend wasn't anywhere in sight when the incident took place I had 2scream 4her 2 come 2the front so we could leave,we were just at the wrong place at the wrong time, whoever called the police gave them a description of our vehicle in which my girlfriend was driving,we got pulled over there had 2b like 5squad cars that cut us off as we were heading 2our destination they came at us with guns in our face screaming get on the ground, because they got a call about a shooting that had taken place&we were harboring a masked gunmen, after we were searched & told our side of the story we were still treated like criminals,at the time my girlfriend was working as an detention officer at the detention center in georgetown, the offocers got all up in our faces but, mostly hers, after the officers realized who she was they got more&more agressive in the way they were talking 2her &handeling the situation, they kept sceaming that they would see that she would lose her job,she got put on paid leave&then sbout a month later she was arrested&fired, what an injustice because,I fell that the investigation was not handled properly.

I'm in agreement with everyone who thinks the whole APD needs to be investigated. There are a lot of things going on over there that shouldn't be. Pat just happened to be the one to get caught for what he may or may not have been doing. I like knowing who the cops are around town, but it's a whole other ball game when they're looking the other way and letting things happen that shouldn't. I think that's a lot of what's wrong with the town now.

They need to start drug testing the officers in Andrews especially Nesmith. And especially how he chases after under-age females. Selling his oils on and off duty.

Posted by Jeezy on 10/10/2008

First of all, Mr. and Mrs. Cumbee served a God that can take a bad situation and make it postive. So don't feel sorry. Patrick isn't the first and he wont be the last. I think the people in Andrews should find something to do with their lives. Like try to improve education, establish black own businesses or get ready for the fall and winter season. I hate to say it but the people are worrying about the wrong things. Instead of gossiping and stating the untruth, found out how the leaders in Andrews can make a difference. Patrick needs to know everybody isn't your friend and some family members aren't for you. Patick needs to understand that honesty and integrity is his main job to the citizens of Andrews. Also, he needs to know the people in Andrews are like crabs in a bucket, always pulling each other down. One thing about the Cumbee Family, we stick together. We won't give up!(at least some of us)This too shall pass! If you don't know you better ask somebody!! A Cumbee For Life.

Do not put the family of the guys on trial here. These are grown mens. But please investigate the hold department and see what comes out of that.

Posted by Citizen on 10/10/2008

This is really getting on my nerves. People always have something negative to say about people's families, but when it's time to face the music when it pertains to their own they are on hush mouth. The way i see it is these mean are grown. I say THESE because i am referring to all three suspects, not just one. They make their own decisions so before you spotlight one, know that there are two others involved. I agree with the person above who stated that Andrews needs to have out of town authority because the ones who are there are familiar with the streets there and the people in them. It's not fair to withhold information as is when you don't give someone else that leway because they are rivals with someone else you know. In other words get all these crooked cops out of here! You know someone is doing wrong fess up. You're just as wrong as the people sitting on the side of the defence for what we now call snitching. People need to feel safe and they want their family that remain there to feel safe as well. How can that happen when you have people of authority working with the people who make that town unsafe for the ones that reside there?

Posted by Old Town Native on 10/10/2008

It's about time someone is doing something about our crooked cops in Andrews...We all know who they are of course..but the authorities around here are so blind to what is going on right under their noses..Wake Up!! The whole police force in Andrews should be investigated!! Stolen goods wasn't the only Officer Cumbie was into..what about fighting bulldogs!! No one cares about what these people do to these poor animals and it is known that he is in on it too!!

Posted by april on 10/10/2008

Having feet of clay is not an exclusive trait, even when the miscreants are law enforcement. We aren't exacly speaking of some brutal crime involving truncating someone's alotted time on this insignificant dirt ball. BTW Did you hear about the dislexic that stayed up all night wondering if there really was a dog?

Posted by eddienine on 10/10/2008

A good Officer would have not only arrested the seller on charges of selling stolen property but also stood up like a man and performed his duties as an officer of the law and shut down the chop shop. People say "he just got caught up in it." I say a police officer is hire based on their ability to make sound and just decisions. This is what happens when you look the other way because " you grew up with them" or "there from around the way". You get what you deserve for "Keepin it real". Real Stupid.

Posted by Citizen X on 10/10/2008

NOW, not to get off the subject: What about the other officer (Nesmith). How about his DIRT!!!. He has been quite aggravating and harrassing folks lately. Everyone needs to speak up about him.

Posted by Leave Us ALone on 10/10/2008

In alot of these messages people are saying that Andrews need to mind their business and leave the young men's families alone. The only part I agree on is leaving the families alone! But as a resident in Andrews, I think we should know what the police are doing whenever they are arrested for things like this. Peolpe get arested everyday for things like this! Now its a cop and everyone wants to put Andrews down! But its not Andrews fault that Patrick did what he did, its his!!!! He knew that the bike was stolen, he should not have bought it. He should have also token his job serious and arrested or turn the guy in that was selling the stolen bike. So I think that all of the men should serve the time they get. They shouldn't get treated differently because they was a cop and dentention officer.

To: Mr. & Mrs. Cumbee: The PRESUMPTION of innocence-being innocent until proven guilty - is a legal RIGHT that the accused in criminal trials has in many nations. The BURDEN OF PROOF is thus on the PROSECUTION, which has to collect and present enough compelling evidence to convince the Judge/Jury who are restrained and ordered by LAW to consider only actual evidence and testimony that is legally admissible, and in most cases lawfully obtained, that the accused is guilty beyond a REASONABLE DOUBT. In case of remaining doubt, the accused is ACQUITTED. DEFAMATION/LIBEL/SLANDER: The communication of a statement that makes a false claim, expressly stated or implied to be factual, that may give an individual a negative image. SLANDER refers to a malicious, false and defamtory statement or report, while LIBEL refers to any other form of communication such as WRITTEN WORDS. Most jurisdiction allow legal actions CIVIL AND/OR CRIMINAL. Posters: Walk softly, speak facts and let not your words or thoughts put you in a non-affordable position.
