“They are a wonderful group of young ladies. Very coachable.”

— Coach Dennis Britton

Carvers Bay Lady Bears lost at home Monday to Hannah-Pamplico by a score of 33 to 26.

Coach Dennis Britton found good in the game, though.

"The fact that we are so young and inexperienced, they accomplished a lot by keeping (the margin) under 10 points," Britton said.

"I wish we could cut down on the turnovers, but that comes with being inexperienced," he said.

Rebounding was a key factor in the game. Hannah-Pamplico made 39 rebounds to Carvers Bay's 21.

Shooting from the free throw line also needs work. The Lady Bears made 11 of 25.

"Those are things we need to emphasize during (Tuesday's) practice," Britton said.

Jasmine Eddy scored almost half of the team's points, with 12. She shot 8 for 12 from the foul line, made 9 rebounds and 4 steals.

"Overall as a team, we didn't do so well."

Chiquita Linen only got two points, Britton said, and fouled out. Likewise, Danielle Green fouled out. She scored 3 pints and made 5 rebounds.

Ebony Kearson scored 5 points, made 4 rebounds and had four blocked shots. Chantelle Linen scored 4 points.

By quarters, Carvers Bay scored 6, 7, 7 and 6 points, for 26.

Hannah-Pamplico scored 13, 5, 9 and 6, for 33.

"We were consistent," Britton said.

For H-P, leading scorer was A. Poston with 8. -- she fouled out -- and O. Scott, 8; H. Jordan, 2; S. McElveen, 5; and K. Myers, 2.

Carvers Bay had 24 team fouls and H-P had 23.

"I think my girls are trying to get to the point where they can play together as a unit," Britton said.

There were 11 girls who graduated last year, a situation he inherited, so there's a shortage of experienced players.

One of those graduates was Alexis Taylor, who paid a visit to the school on Monday.

She was the first player for Carvers Bay to score more than 1,000 points.

The biggest obstacle the Lady Bears face is understanding the need to play together, rather than as individuals.

Last Saturday's win over Georgetown was a big upset, Britton said. "We didn't expect to do that."

Wednesday night, the Bears play St. James of Murrells Inlet. "They beat us by 40 points last week."

St. James is a very well-coached team, he continued, one of the best at that school in quite a few years.

"Hopefully, at some point we will get to that level."

Britton said his current seniors have taken underclassmen under their wings. They're working to become a family, which is something that needs to happen in order to build a team, he said.

"The underclassmen are really listening to the upperclassmen" and are open to suggestions. That's a point of character, and "makes my job a lot easier."

"They are a wonderful group of young ladies. Very coachable. We can only move forward," Britton said.
