Update: Clemson's Tommy Bowden leaving Death Valley

Published on 10/13/2008

Clemson Tigers head football coach Tommy Bowden is no longer the team's head coach.  After the team's 3-3 start to the season, it was anounced today that he is leaving the team effective immediately.
Early reports were that Bowden was fired but Clemson University officials denied those claims.
" After two meetings on Monday morning between Bowden and Athletic Director Terry Don Phillips, it was agreed upon that Bowden would no longer be the Clemson Head Coach," the school's website says.
Bowden said "Terry Don Phillips approached me this morning and we agreed that this is the best solution for the direction of the program. Clemson has been very good to me and my family. Both of our children are Clemson graduates. I appreciate the opportunity Clemson University gave me and the support of the administration while I was here. I also want to thank all the players and coaches who worked so hard for this program the last 10 years."
Receivers coach Dabo Swinney is expected to serve as the interim coach.
The Tigers were ranked No. 9 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 poll and were favored to win their first ACC championship in Bowden's 10th season as coach. Those dreams began to fade when the team was blown away by Alabama 34-10 in the season opener. The team has also lost to Maryland and Wake Forest this year.
Bowden received a lucrative contract extension from Clemson after the 2007 season. He received the extension after considering a potential coaching position at Arkansas.
Bowden, the son of Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, has a 72-45 record and eight bowl appearances at Clemson.

"Get A Life", you're a moron. If you knew how many millions of dollars Clemson has paid that stiff, maybe you wouldn't feel sorry for him. Why do you hate that he was released? By the way, Clemson says he quit. What does coming from a "good family" have to do with being a good football coach. I doubt that his family is "hurting", at least not for money. He's a product of nepotism who would be selling cars if it were not for who his father is- just like Bush and McCain. Stop embarrassing Gamecock fans by posting such drivel.

I don't think he's hurting too bad, he gets 3.5 million for leaving.

Jabo, get a life. I am a Carolina fan and I hate that he was released. He comes from a good family and I am sure his family hurts for him.

That's wonderful news!

This is terrible news- for Gamecock fans. Bowden is a joke of a football coach and a poor excuse for a man. He got where he is today just like Bush and McCain- because of who his father is. Good riddance to the guy who called a wildlife officer a "clown" because he gave Bowden a citation for fishing without a license the first week he was at Clumpson. Even Danny Ford wouldn't fish without a license.
