• In the hoop -- and the place went nuts

Andrews girls won over Lincoln High girls of McClellanville by a score of 68 to 22. That was a good win, "but winning isn't everything."

The loudest cheers of the night came when Shatara Rouse scored her first two-point basket ever as a Lady Yellow Jacket.

Coach Roosevelt Giles said Rouse has "got the heart to play.

"Everybody just wanted her to score. This was her first year ever playing ball," Giles said.

Many of the fans at the game clapped and cheered, and Rouse had a smile on her face that just about lit up the gym.

As for the rest of the game, "We started out doing what we wanted," Giles said. His team is young, with only three from last year.

He was able to get everyone on the team some playing time Tuesday so each would have some game experience.

The game wasn't so much against Lincoln, he continued, as it was "against ourselves to make us better."

Tyshera Middleton led the Andrews players with 19 points, followed by Teisha Langley with 14 and Kemba Johnson with 10 points.

Tuesday was a good night for the younger players to mix up with the better players to get experience.

"We're coming along pretty good. I'm looking for good things by the time we get to conference play," he said.

Andrews scored 28 points in the first quarter, 19 in the second, and after the half scored 11 and 10 points.

Lincoln scored 4 in each of the first two periods, followed by 5 and 10 points in the third and fourth quarters.

Giles is in his second year as head coach. He followed his daughter Bethany Giles-Burgess who continues as an assistant coach but is also the principal at Browns Ferry Elementary School. Sondra Boyd is another assistant coach.

"The girls have got a lot to learn," he said of the basketball squad. "I'm going to see a lot of things out of them."
