Andrews gets first region win

Andrews High's boys basketball team got its first region win of the season on Friday night, a 63-61 overtime victory over Manning.
It was the first time since early in the season that Yellow Jackets' coach Kevin Branham had his entire roster available for the game.
"Last Wednesday was the first time that we have had our full 13-player roster back together," Branham said. "It made a tremendous impact in our practices and during the game."
Harold Langley led all scorers with 32 points. He also had five rebounds and four steals. Andrews' big men - Travis Collins, Monte McCrea, Neal Pope and Rodquel Davis - combined for 28 points and 16 rebounds. McCrea had two dunks and Davis hit the go-ahead free throws in overtime. Ervin Heard had six assists, five rebounds and three steals.
"I am so happy for our players to finally get a win," Branham said. "Our goal is to win a region championship and that goal is still possible. I keep reminding our players that it does not matter how you start a season, but how you finish it."
Andrews' girls team was held to single-digit scoring in three quarters during a 55-27 loss to Manning.
Neosha Greene led the Yellow Jackets with six points, nine rebounds and four steals. Nyiesha Filmore had six points and two steals; Jetovia Jackson had five points and four rebounds; Jaleika Filmore had four points and seven rebounds; and Quanisha Brown had four points and three rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets are now 6-8 overall.
Andrews hosted Lake City last night and hosts Kingstree on Friday.
Around the county
Carvers Bay's boys improved to 10-8 overall and 5-1 in the region with a 74-54 win over Green Sea-Floyds on Friday night.
Da'Shawn Aiken was named one the Coastal Basketball Coaches Association's "Fabulous Five" for the week of Jan. 16. Aiken averaged 24 points and four steals per game.
The Bears' girls (2-10) lost 44-32 to Green Sea-Floyds.
Carvers Bay traveled to Creek Bridge last night and hosts Lake View on Friday.
Georgetown's boys (9-7) lost 67-59 to Wilson on Friday night, its fourth straight region loss.
The Tigers jumped out to a 20-12 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 42-28 at the half.
Georgetown outscored Wilson in the third and fourth quarters but couldn't complete the comeback.
The Bulldogs' girls (9-3) broke a three-game losing streak with a 49-45 win over Wilson.
Raven Smith led Georgetown with 17 points, four rebounds and four steals. Moet Spann had 11 points and five steals; Shanell Wright has eight points and 10 rebounds; and Taziya Moody had eight points and four steals.
Georgetown hosted Myrtle Beach last night and travels to Socastee on Friday night.
