The Town of Andrews lost a longtime businessman who was killed in a two-vehicle accident Monday night in rural Georgetown County.

Coroner Kenny Johnson said Virgil Mixon, a 71-year-old lifelong Andrews resident, died from head injuries sustained in the accident which occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Highway 41, also known as County Line Road, about two miles north of Andrews.

S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Bob Beres said Mixon was on the wrong side of the road when his truck was hit by a car with a woman and two children. All three of the occupants of that vehicle, who were wearing seat belts, escaped with no serious injuries.

Beres said Mixon, who was making a left-hand turn when he was hit, was not wearing a seat belt.

The accident occurred within feet of a vehicle being driven by Waynette Morris who, coincidentally, has been a friend of Mixon and his family for many years.

Morris said she helped break the window out of Mixon's truck so she could get to him to begin CPR.

"I worked for a long time then a man came and relieved me and we worked until the ambulance got there," Morris said.

She said it was about an hour later she learned Mixon had died.

Mixon was a retired manager of Allied Insurance Co. in Andrews which is where many people got to know him.

Regina Belue, pastor of The River Pentecostal Holiness Church, at one time ran a beauty shop in Andrews in one of Mixon's buildings.

"He was a very kind and generous person," Belue said, adding the death has brought "great sadness" to the Andrews community.

Morris said she and her husband loved to hunt with Mixon.

"He would always pick on me and my husband about who would kill the most," she recalled.

Mixon was very good friends with Bobby Watford and Edsel Hemingway.

"We would call them the Three Musketeers because they were always together," Morris said.

"It hit a lot of people very hard," Morris said of the accident.
