Altman is man of year

"I was in the process of introducing the true recipient of the award and they double crossed me."

That was Linwood Altman's reaction to a surprise announcement during the recent Pawleys Island Civic Association (PICA) annual meeting at Pawleys Chapel.

With 235 people attending, Altman says it was the largest crowd they've ever had for the event and the reception following at the Sea View Inn was one of the best yet.

It took quite an effort to pull the wool over the eyes of Altman who is the president and founder of the civic association which began 38 years ago. Pawleys Island Mayor Bill Otis says because Altman is so deserving, but has refused the award in prior years, the PICA Board of Directors decided to trick him into receiving the award.

"It was way overdue," Otis said. "Linwood has characteristically refused it in the past, so we decided to surprise him."

During the traditional speech Altman gives each year to introduce the Pawleys Island Citizen of the Year, he announced that Town Councilmember Mike Adams was the recipient. At that point, Board member Howard Ward stood up and said that Altman was wrong -- that Altman himself was the citizen of the year.

"I thought Mike Adams was a very deserving candidate," Altman said, with some added comments. "How could they do that. I'm the president of that organization. It is not legitimate."

Otis says Altman has been instrumental in making Pawleys Island what it is today.

"Without Linwood Altman, the Town of Pawleys Island never would have been formed, and without the Town being formed, most of the things that have happened to protect the island would not have been possible," Otis said. "His legacy lives on, not only in the fact that the island is protected, but the fact that the Town exists."

Altman has also been instrumental in PICA publishing three books, the latest of which will be available on Oct. 1. Titled "Pawleys Island: A Century of History in Photographs," this photographic essay reflects Pawleys Island and the life on the island during the last century (1900 to 1999). Local historian Lee Brockington wrote the text accompanying the photographs.

According to Altman, they have already pre-sold 500 copies and are still taking orders at Pawleys Island Realty. For more information, call the office at 843-237-4275.

I met Linwood approximately 55 years ago when he and Nancy lived in Beaufort and he managed the local Essotane distributor. He was very active in the community back then and was missed by everyone when he and Nancy moved back to Pawleys Island and Georgetown. In spite of being so active in the community he always had time for family and friends. You will find no one more honest and hardworking. Although we moved to Las Vegas 38 years ago, we have stayed in touch.

Not bad for a guy that started out bagging groceries at the old gas station there on Hwy 17 and then stole the store from the owner when he got old and sick. Yeah, Linwood has impacted the Waccamaw Neck. Developer that made a fortune off cutting down trees and now wants to stop everybody else from cutting trees. Yea, yea, right.

Linwood Altman has impacted the Waccamaw Neck in so many positive ways over the years. He is a true "Man of the Decades". He and Nancy have given so much to the community of Pawleys Island and Georgetown County. Linwood, Thanks for your dedication and love of the area!!!!
