600+ apply as 'Isopod' extras

GEORGETOWN, S.C. — At least 600 people attended a casting call Saturday for a new science-fiction movie that will start filming within the next two weeks in Georgetown.
The request for people who can walk back and forth, fill up scenery and eat a helping of blue crabs drew teenagers, children and adults, and even some infants, to the casting call for the movie “Isopod.”
Many in line didn’t exactly know the plot of the film, or the exact definition of an isopod, but that didn’t stop them from bringing a picture and some acting chops to Howard Adult Center.
The line included residents who do voice-over work and others involved in community theater.
“I played Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Theater of the Republic in Conway,” said Eric Heinemann. “I’ll be happy with anything.”
Heinemann’s wife, Tracy, and daughter, Anna, also waited for a chance to become an extra.
Anna takes dancing classes and likes to perform, her mother said.
“She [Anna] likes to do it all,’’ she said.
The potential extras presented pictures and filled out short forms asking everything from their hair color and shoe size to their make and model of car.
Some local cars might be used in filming some scenes, said casting director Tona Dahlquist.
Extras are going to be asked to do “whatever the director wants them to do,’’ according to casting officials.
The average day will be about 12 hours, Dahlquist said. Extras will get paid by the hour, although she didn’t know their exact salaries.
The movie, even though it is in preproduction, has already caused excitement on the Internet.

The director

Barry Levinson has directed other movies, including Rain Man, Bugsy and The Natural, according to MovieHut.com.
The Isopod film is causing a stir because the low-budget, independent film is expected to be a hit.
“Isopod is expected be another masterpiece venture by this multi-talented filmmaker and though the most interesting snippets of the upcoming science fiction thriller have been kept under wraps, movie buffs will soon be able to get their hand on something solid on the project,’’ the MovieHut Web site said. “Until then they are encouraged to keep their eyes and ears open to any news regarding Barry Levinson because it sure will be one of the not to be missed movies.”
The filming will take place from September to October in Georgetown, Dahlquist said.
City Administrator Chris Eldridge said recently that the production should have little impact on the day-to-day operations on Front Street.
He said the company is using hand-held cameras to record the movie, a method made famous in movies such as Blair Witch Project.
He said Georgetown was chosen because the filmmakers liked the town's oak-draped streets and waterfront scenery.
The movie is predicted to have many water scenes.
The exact plot is unknown.
“An isopod is like a pill bug,’’ said Georgetown resident John Plunket, who attended Saturday’s casting call. “The biggest isopods are about a foot long and live at the bottom of the ocean. They’re not very scary.”
